U2 ripped off...
... Taylor Deupree with their new album cover.
US musician Taylor Deupree has alleged that the cover of U2’s forthcoming album is "an exact rip-off" of his own disc, ‘Specification. Fifteen’ The Irish rockers recently revealed the sleeve for "No Line On The Horizon", which is based on a photo by Japanese artist Hiroshi Sugimoto. ![]() ![]() Taylor Deupree - Specification. Fifteen In a online posting under the headline "U2 Album Cover…Have I Seen This Before?", Deupree admitted there was little chance of legal action saying "In the end, we all know who wins". Outrageous!!!! http://12kblog.wordpress.com/2009/01/17/u2-album-cover/ |
what?
maybe hiroshi sugimoto is to blame for selling it twice |
I think it was also a 7" cover before.
either way, boring cover art great photo, when seen in large context all big in yr face, but as a cover for a record? |
ive seen sugimoto's photographs and they are magnificent.
shouldn't the beef be between the photographer & taylor dupree, though? if u2 acknowledges sugimoto as a source-- who is the plagiarist? sugimoto: "taylor dupree stole my photos!" that would make more sense. |
definately better on vinyl format then on cd (like almost every cover)
I wonder which market is the biggest for U2, CD or mp3? |
It's not like it's a radical, shocking, innovative image. Both of those boring, bland album covers suck. Fuck them both.
|
yes indeed...exact rip off, then shopped...would be more accurate

pendeiro, you gotta see sugimoto's photos in real life. they are fucking gorgeous-- empty yes, but amazing. the website doesnt do justice to the film prints but at least try http://www.sugimotohiroshi.com/ ps i saw these and they blew my fucking nuts http://www.sugimotohiroshi.com/seascape.html |
<sarcasm>yup - total ripoff - no one before these two had ever used images of a horizon in artwork and one obviously ripped off the other.</sarcasm>

One of my alltime most favourite artists mentioned together with one of my least favourite ones, ALL IN ONE THREAD!
What a lucky day for me today. |

That's true, and I wouldn't be surprised if it eventually turned into this. Maybe Sugimato was unaware TD used it, and TD was unaware that he needed the rights, assuming it was just a first come, first serve basis. It's possible that now Sugimato will, as you said, claim that he did give the rights to U2, and that TD will then be prosecuted. By the way, I know nothing of this whole case, so everything I have said is uninformed speculation... |
this image is the visual equivalent of how U2's "music" makes me feel.

I would not call it exact, but yeah. so did you hear new U2 single? "put your boots on" or smth. like that. main riff sounds very familiar, that might be another rip-off, hehe, maybe not exact but very like. can't think which song exactly. it remind me something by RATM, or Soundgarden, or Stone Temple Pilots?
|
as if u2 have ever heard of taylor deupree anyway.

u2 aren't the first and they won't be the last.... just perhaps, and i'm playing devils advocate as i don't like u2, but, just perhaps it may be a homage....

Not a surprise, U2 is the most unoriginal band ever.
That one song a few years back was a total ripoff of Keep Me Hanging On |
OMG ITS EXACTLY THE SAME HOLY SHIT WOWOWOW
This has never happened before |
they also ripped off themselves and aha and me.
|
Everyone involved is ripping off a watercolor I did in high school.
