Lee Ranaldo w/ Bang on a Can, April 2
This looks pretty good, I think tickets just went on sale...
tickets here: http://kaufman-center.org/merkin-con...g-fund-concert April 2nd (Thursday) - People's Commissioning Fund (PCF) Concert at Merkin Concert Hall, New York, NY. Click here for tickets. Three world premieres commissioned by the people! This year, the All-Stars premiere work by international up-and-coming composers Kate Moore (Australia-Holland), Lok Yin Tang (Hong Kong), and New York’s David Longstreth, also known widely for his ground-breaking indie rock band Dirty Projectors. The 2nd part of the concert is a terrific double-feature: a recently commissioned work by the legendary American composer Alvin Lucier and the New York Premiere of a live collaboration with Lee Ranaldo of Sonic Youth. The PCF is a radical partnership between artists and audiences to commission works from adventurous composers. For more information, please visit our website |
That is a fantastic space to see and hear music...a shame its mostly a closed shop.

"listen to an excerpt of Ranaldo and the All-Stars performing this piece at UNC Chapel Hill last spring!" got this in an e-mail from Bang on a Can, not sure if it was posted before... |
Selections from this night will be played on New Sounds Live (John Schaeffer's radio show) later this month, which is on WNYC or on the web.
Lee's piece was about 20 minutes long, and was really good- Started with Lee doing some solo work on his green jazzmaster (if I remember right) including violin bow, some sort of electronic recorder/blackberry thing, etc. then the band(Bang on a Can All-stars) joined in in a drony type of groove and in the last movement they jam out Sonic youth style almost, a maximum intensity noise jam, including the piano player vigorously playing the piano strings directly inside the piano box. I wonder how they will mix the radio show because I thought the piano and strings (cello) should have been louder, kind of got drowned out by guitar and drums, maybe they can adjust that in mixing, I don't know. Weird part of the show was David Longstreth cancelled, which is ok, we knew about it since last week, but you'd think they would at least mention that or have some kind of explanation, but not a word, it's like that first press release never happened. Should add- Lee gave a short interview with Schaeffer before the piece, talked about the background to the composition, the guitar tuning for this one and couple of other things. |
