Guru Guru is such an underrated band. A Krautrock band that like other Krautrock bands sounds like no other band other than Guru Guru (krautrock pretty much is the best genre, its not even a genre really, just pretty much means experimental german music in the 70s, no common thread in any of the sounds). Guru Guru seems to have taken thier sound directly from Hendrix and Boue CHeer and the heavy Psych sound. They have nothing to do with the synths of Tangerine Dream or the comps of Kraftwerk or the instruments sounding like electronics of Ash Ra Tempel (all bands I love consequently).

Guru Guru is like abstract Skrok Blues that is totally distoro guitar driven, "Immer Lustig" off of "Kanguru" is the best example of this. A 15 minute noisey guitar and drum freakout, that alternates between loud and quiet through the whole song untill the mid way point where it reaches absolutely manic, then settles down again. There's plenty of great laid back jamming parts too in which guitar is played clean, and the music just builds. Great drumming. I can't help but feel that this is up there with "Sister Ray" and Patti Smith's "Land" as one of the most important long freak rock songs of all time. This is also a band I thought would be more appreciated by Sonic Youth fans, as we are all lovers of the guitar. And out of all my many favorite Kraut bands (1. Can 2. Ash Ta 3. Faust 4. German Oak 5. Neu 6. Guru Guru 7. Amon Duul 2 8. Cosmic Psychos 9. Tangerine Dream 10. Gong), Guru is the only one that strikes me as a guitar band.

How can you love something consequently?

P.P.P.S Gong weren't krautrock either, they were formed in France by an Australian and an English woman.

I've heard UFO once when I was first getting into krautrock about four years ago and I don't remember being all too impressed with it. I'll try giving 'em another listen.

I thought that maybe Great was the drummer's name. Then we have a subject and a verb. I'm trying to cut the guy some slack.

I'm starting to worry about this guy for real. I'm not kidding. I mean, his urge to write about a band before he finished listening to the record is psycologically dangerous.

Mani Neumeier is still as incredible and athletic a drummer as I have witnessed, and a true prince of a fellow besides. Seeing him play as part of the Acid Mothers Guru trio was easily one of the finest performances I have seen in recent years. He is truly an inspirational human being, and I do not use that term lightly in the least.

This thread is hilarious. It's almost a shame I have to go to sleep now, but I have to get up in a few hours.... less than three, actually.

Guru Guru were pretty great and unique from around 1970-71. I believe Neumeier and Trepte studied under Irene Schweizer (first wave euro improv pianist) in the 60's and were part of the initial phase of the euro free improv scene having played with alot of heavyweights (Brotzmann, Schoof, Bennink, Bailey etc etc) and Guru Guru is an example of a melding of this improv with rock, there is one or two sick videos on youtube with Ax Geinrich creating sick guitar sounds and feedback and Trepte using a mouth-contact mic-dictaphone-tape manipulation! shit this like light years before Aaron Dilloway and Wolf Eyes, i love the album "UFO", the sounds on the self titled track led the way for lo-fi noise bands like the Dead C., i have an amazing live recording i found on the net (Radio Bremen, Sept 21 1971) where they sound like a more tripped version of the Stooges playing "L.A. Blues"... The album Hinten is also quite awesome with some nice shortwave radio ala AMM type of soundscapes with melting Hendrix-like guitar moves. Kanguru is kinda just OK to me some more generic sound rock riffs and soloing and after that they became more of a cheesy prog kraut rock band. As mentioned above a version of Acid Mothers Temple did some stuff with Mani, definitly a great drummer...
