A tribute to tribute albums
About ten or fifteen years ago it seemed like anyone who could muster even a slightly tuneful fart would get a queue of bands wanting to record a track on an album paying tribute to them. There were loads of dross ones, but there were also a fair few that were a bloody good listen.
My favourites: Sweet Relief (Victoria Williams) The Bridge (Neil Young) Whore (Wire) Give Me The Cure (er... The Cure) Anyone else care to give praise to favourite tribute albums? |
I've just bought 'Til Things Are Brighter, a tribute to Johnny Cash from about 1988 or 89, on ebay. That's a mighty fine one too.
|
I've got that 'Sgt Pepper Knew My Father' LP with The Fall, Sonic Youth, Frank Sidebottom etc. I'm not too keen on it, really, but it's OK.

I think I stopped paying attention to tribute albums when I found out U2 covered "Beat on the Brat" for a Ramones one.
Still though, singing my version of what I think U2's version probably sounds like is entirely too much fun. |
I like classical tributes.

use it wont let me edit my post. here are some covers.

I heard that Pavement tribute a few weaks ago and that blew hard. The only tribute I can think of that was kind of neat is the Give Me the Cure one. Even though I don't like the Cure.
|
I looooove those bluegrass tributes....haven't heard the Metallica one though.
