new yo la tengo song from upcoming album!
|
upbeat FTW. Nice.
|
yup.

I just picked up Popular Songs but I haven't heard it yet, nor found a thread on it here.
What's the consensus then? As good as ATNTIISO? (Did I get that right? Their epicly great 2000 album?) |
Its a good album for sure, but different from "And then nothing..."

Popular Songs may become my favorite album by them. It's the first time I got to see them in concert, and they're one of the best live bands I've ever seen. I love how they threw the three longest songs at the end. More Stars Than There Are in Heaven is my favorite tune... possibly of all time by them (The Story of Yo La Tango is hard to beat though). And the Glitter Is Gone is insane... I swear I hear voices in the middle of the song, but they're inaudible. By Two's is another stand out track for me... so pretty and mysterious. Here to Fall is a great opener and Avalon or Someone Very Similar is a great follow up. Periodically Double or Triple was my favorite song to hear live... followed by All Your Secrets. I love, love, love this album.

solid album, it's cool to hear they're awesome live as well. I'm off to see them play for the first time in a couple of weeks.
|
yeah, I like it, reminds me of I can hear the heart beating as one, but have some good moments like here to fall, nothing to hide, and the glitter is gone.
|
It's good. It's not among they're better albums this decade, but I like it. It's kinda relaxing. I really like the last three tracks, that's Yo La Tengo at their best!

Oh man, wasn't holding up huge hopes for this album but fairly excited now seeing your positive reviews. I am going to see them in a couple weeks in Glasgow. Will be my fourth time seeing them and I have found them consistently great live.

Ive loved this band for years now but they were always sort of a mood band, like I had to be in that late night solitude mode for most of their music. This album was different though right off the start with "here to fall" that i like to think would be something syd would have done had he progressed. This is def their most consistent and far ranging album in a while, i love it. Especially the MBV mashnote "more stars than their our in heaven (what a great title).
I saw them live in boston (still astonished by how their shows sell out so quickly) and they were not what i was expecting at all. I imagined a band of librarians playing and fans acting accordingly. How wonderful of a surprise when they opened with Ira channeling insane feedback like the illegitimate child of lou reed and thurston moore. I think alot of the middle aged couples were surprised by this as well, but fuck them. Not only was YLT more raucous live but Ira was funny too, cracking jokes and displaying his perfectionism when they redid the third verse of "stockholm syndrome" in concert cause he thought it could sound better. Everyone should see this band at least once. killer version of here to fall http://pitchfork.com/tv/#/episode/2052-yo-la-tengo/1 |
