tumors of the parotid are often benign, but it seems as if he's already had infiltration of nearby lymph-nodes, which means that it's malignant and in the process of metastasizing.

hopefully, they've caught it before it's gotten further than the local nodes.

I met this guy once (ran into him in the basement of a friend's record store) and he was as nice a guy as can be. Wishing him the very best; glad to hear it's not as dire as it could have been.

Wow, that's terrible. I'm really sorry to hear about this. At least it seems like they caught this early though, and that it's totally treatable. Here's hoping he beats it quick.
