I just got fired.

I guess my girlfriend and I can say goodbye to our apartment. :(

SYRFox 07.27.2009 08:09 AM

Damn, this sucks
I feel sorry for you man :(

Dr. Eugene Felikson 07.27.2009 08:24 AM

Worst case scenario: I have to move back in with my 'rents.

I rushed into shit too early.
I got my first full-time job, got my first paycheck, got my own place immediately after. How naive.

At least I still get to go to film school...

*sigh*

This whole directing dream better work out, at least half-decently.
I'd hate to peak out as a high school dropout with nothing more than a G.E.D., and a film school certificate.

[/depressed rant]

I was laid off in mid June and haven't been able to land another job. I have August's rent, but after that, who knows ?

I wanna take the remaining money I have and go beach bum in Hawaii.

I'd rather live in a tent in the woods to EVER live in an apartment. Feel lucky to escape common walls. At a time like this you ought to do something of your dreams....move on somewhere else, a change of scenery can be very invigorating and inspiring. Hopefully your girlfriend will want the adventure too.

*edit* I just read your last post, my idea is way off, like by 180 degrees. Oh well.

Fuck! I'm sorry to hear that!
I'm also contemplating how in the hell I can scrape another month's rent, while I hunt endlessly for a new job...or if it's even worth it. I AM only 18 after all.

That sounds like a wonderful plan.
If only it didn't seem so out of reach.

I'm signing off for now.
It's time to channel all of my emotions, and 'what-have-you's into some form of a script.

Rob Instigator 07.27.2009 08:31 AM

fucking sucks man. Best of luck.

I've lived paycheck to paycheck for the last year or so and it sucks. I fantasize about my idea all the time. It IS seemingly out of reach, in the long run anyway, but still.

You sound a bit more responsible than me though, so since you have that discipline, maybe you should stick around and go to school or find a better job for you and your girlfriend.

Good luck to you and thanks for your empathy.

floatingslowly 07.27.2009 09:46 AM

my car wouldn't start this morning and I'm watching get towed. truth be told, I was feeling sorry for myself. not anymore.

jesus, doc.

atsonicpark 07.27.2009 10:08 AM

That sucks, dude.

Hm.. I'll probably be fired soon, too, for my "attitude".

Dr. Eugene Felikson 07.27.2009 10:41 AM

So here's the deal:

I've already paid my half of this month's rent, and my girlfriend is paying her half today (meaning the apartment is our's until August 25th).

What do I do now that I don't have a $7.50ph job to attend to everyday? Well, there are many things...but only two that I can think of are actually productive.

a) Shoot my fucking short film already. I already have music from high quality, notorious bands such as Dead Air Fresheners, and Scissor Shock; a "new" camera; as well as 95% of my SFX gear and lighting. I even met a cake decorator/graphic designer at work, who was more than glad to make my production company logo for his portfolio! Although I haven't secured legal rights on the name yet (I was planning on it with my next paycheck).

b) Look for a new job...wherever I can find it. I only had this job for little over 2 months...and I was fired. Should I avoid putting it on a resume?

Although fired (bitchy afternoon shift manager...who had no clue whatsoever as to what personal space was; although that's a different story), I still left on good terms; I was just not enthused enough about baked goods, and supposedly "looked forward to my breaks too much".

But I've gotten over the initial shock already. The worst that could come out of this is that I'm an 18 yr old film geek that lives with his parents, has a hot girlfriend, and attends film school. Sounds like a decent life to me - it just sucks that I have no idea what to do after that now, and was finally starting to truly feel as if I had everything figured out.

atsonicpark 07.27.2009 10:49 AM

I probably wouldn't put it on an application. This is terrible advice, maybe, but it's true: Um. Can anyone in your family lie for you? That's what I did. Before I worked at where I work at now, I worked at Toyota and uhm... yeah, some shit happened... and I wasn't there very long. Needless to say, I didn't put it on an app.

However, my grandpa made a business up and even had business cards printed. It wasn't really a business, as it was just him willing to do welding for people. Still, I asked him if I could put down as a reference and I wrote on my next app that I was "employed" by him for 6 months and they called him and asked him and I got the job, easily.

Dr. Eugene Felikson 07.27.2009 10:59 AM

Either way, the film is nearly completely funded (or so it seems), and my schooling is being paid for by some dead great uncle. Gas, weed, cigarettes, and school projects aside... I don't really have much to pay for.

Thanks for all the support guys. It's actually kinda heartwarming. :o

I don't know which is worse, being fired or having so much senority and clout at a job you hate that you'd have to do something REALLY bad to get fired...

Of course, being fired from a job you like is heartbreaking, whereas being fired from a job you hate is an insult.

Don't you love union jobs?

GeneticKiss 07.27.2009 02:06 PM

Oh no, my job isn't union. In fact, they just made us watch an online video with a bunch of (bad) actors posing as employees of the company gushed about how great it was to work there and how having a union would fuck everything up.

I just do such good (not great) work and I get along so well with (most of) the people working there, plus I've been there six and a half years now, so any time I do something wrong it's like, "Well just try to be more careful in the future".

static-harmony 07.27.2009 02:14 PM

True they tell me that line all the time. My job is union, which has it's benefits and it's downside. Some people don't deserve to work there.

artsygrrl 07.27.2009 06:42 PM

Well, I see you're in Michigan. I am too, so I can truly relate. At various jobs I've been laid off, let go, downsized, shit-canned, and bumped till my ass was red.
Sooo....if you're ok in the apt. till August, you still have time to put together Plan B. A place to live, then a job. I know it blows to live with the folks but you may have to suck up till you find a job.
I would take just about any job....it's Michigan. Would you be able to save any $$ if you were at your mom and dad's?
Above all, do NOT lose your dream to direct! That's most important.
...I really, really wish you well.

Trasher02 07.27.2009 07:22 PM

Aw man, that's awful... I wish you the best of luck.

ploesj 07.28.2009 05:00 AM

good luck! i hope things work out eventually.

This isn't terrible advice at all. I was sacked from a job I did for two years due to 'gross misconduct' and have never put it on a single application. I just put down 'travelling' to cover that period. It has put me in a couple of situations where I've had to talk about my time spent in India (a place I've never actually set foot in) during interviews but 'travelling' is a great way of covering up for any sins of the past - plus it makes you seem a lot more adventurous and pro-active to potential employers.
