Merce Cunningham Died
Damn! He had a long life though.
Did any of you investigate him? |
was that Ritchie's older dumb brother on happy days?
|

No, he was someone Sonic Youth would have Fuppeted. |
true. but then sonic youth like "dance"
|
This IS the Sonic Youth forum, right?
Fuck it. |
dance as a culturally relevant art form died around 1914
everything "dance" since then has been a slow progression into total irrelevancy. is that an unpopular opinion? |
So sy live a not so sonic life coz they gladly paid hommage to Cunningham?
|
they can do whatever they wanna do.
but it still does not change that the current cultural impact of dance as an art form is right around that of cut-out sillouettes (sp?) or easter egg decoration. |
So something that does not affect the culture of the masses is worthless (p.s. just in case it's not clear, I'm not "fighting" here, eh, but as I think you know already I'm just kinda fascinated about your so strong opinions on stuff from time to time and I wanna know more about your views)?
|
brb guys. making my cut-out easter-egg silhouettes dance.
oh, wait, this is a "RIP" thread. sorry for the desecration. carry on. |

Not so much unpopular as pig-shittingly stupid is what it is. Everyone can, and should, dance. What more cultural relevance do you need? |
Dunno, I really can't say I know shit about dance, but I see people dancing in every damn pop video and boys dancing on tv and tv shows on dancing, and tv shows for kids on dancing, etc etc, "tribal dances" in documentaries about forgotten tribes, dervishes, tarantella, there's this etoile (Bolle) on many talk shows over here...Seems like dancing is everywhere to me.
|
So farewell then, Merce Cunningham
Paragon of modern dance You leapt and pirouetted to Cage and Feldman And influenced many with your dance moves. Without you leading the way Would Michael Clarke have bared his buttocks and danced to the sounds of The Mighty Fall ? I think not! |

worthless and irrelevant are not the same thing |
people dancing is a persona joy to do.
but as ART, as culturally relevant ART, it is dead. |
Bollocks. That's like saying that architecture isn't important because no-one notices it. Go back, think about what you've said, realise it's bollocks and come back with the correct opinion.
|
I dance, in my garage, almost daily. it's a complicated metaphysical event designed to summon rain and good fortune.
when I'm not dancing, you can be sure, in the least, I'm doing a solemn head-nod. does head nodding count as dancing? I think it does. HIGH FUCKING ART. RIP Merce Cunningham, whoever the hell you were. ps: rob's an ideological pitbull. once his jaws lock, you'll never shake him loose. |
Rob's a nice fella who's prone to spates of complete fuckwittery, you mean.
|
his name is Rob Instigator, so at least he's being up front about his tactics.
besides that, fuckwittery is relative. and by that, I mean, Rob's my brother from another mother. he had me at "BECK SUCKS". |

capital letter Dance (the art form, like mosaics, fresco painting, et c.) holds no cultural relevance anymore. It does not affect the world/public consciousness the same way arts such as music, photography, film, literature Architecture etc currently do. of course it is just a rise and fall sine wave, but currently, Dance (the art) is nearly dead as far as cultural relevancy goes. it is right behind musical theatre and lyric poetry! argue all you want but this is true. |
