I'm 90% sure I have Asperger syndrome

I learned how to talk and read before I was 2
When I was 10, my 4th grade class had to do a book report. I read Stephen Hawking's A Brief History of Time and explained it to the class.
I remember bizarre details and useless trivia about every movie, book and band I've ever read and a lot about shit I haven't even seen/read/listened to yet.
I suck at math and science
I hate being around people
I daydream/zone out to the point where it has affected most of my school work (but I get decent grades).

This is all self-diagnosed, but I'm loooking around for a doctor in my town so I can actually get it tested.

floatingslowly 08.07.2009 01:14 PM

first, I see no problem with most of that.

second, how the hell did you explain A Brief History of Time if you suck at science? granted, it's written for the layman, but still.

noisereductions 08.07.2009 01:20 PM

I know a lot.
I remember things.
I'm good at stuff.
I'm awesome.
I'm handsome.
I know a few dance moves.
I could probably handle myself in a phsyical altercation.
I've seen every Friday the 13th film at least 20 times.
I can tell if coffee is from Columbia, France or Italy.
I know many great toppings to put on hotdogs.
I can pretty much recite the Wet Hot American Summer script.
I can beat my mom at Tetris.
I'm fascinated by bad albums.
I can speak one language.
I don't care about the hipness of vinyl.
I don't pop my collar.
I can drink way more beers than people would guess based on my size.
I recently shaved off my sideburns.
I drink somewhere between two and four cups of coffee a day.

diagnosis?

Asperger's is, like all "syndromes" a catch-all for various m,aladies, real and perceived, and not a specific diagnosis.

thindarkduke13 08.07.2009 01:26 PM

Maybe I have Hypochondria then...

noisereductions 08.07.2009 01:30 PM

I forgot to say that I look like this (in case it helps with the diagnosis)

Now:

my dad and brother are specifically diagosed aspergers actually.

thindarkduke, you started talking way early, thats interesting. my brother spoke once at 18 months then not again until he was four. and he's excellent at math. not saying you dont have aspergers because you arent good at math, just me thinking out loud. do you like , flap your arms or any repetitive motion when you get excited or frustrated?

Rob Instigator 08.07.2009 02:21 PM

scizo, what i meant is that many people diagnosed with asperger's do not have actual chromosomal aspergers. but symptoms which mirror that. some are autistic, some are ADHD, some are just misdiagnosed. it happens a lot with asperger's because there is no set consensus as to what exactly constitues asperger's.

schizophrenicroom 08.07.2009 02:24 PM

ahh, i know what you mean and apologize, i tend to snap to the defensive. i really wish there was more training and education in the mental health profession and in the general public to help actually diagnose the correct issue.

Rob Instigator 08.07.2009 02:25 PM

the same thing happened in the 90's with any kid that remotely seemed off was labeled ADHD.

many parents want a tidy label to encapsulate what they see wrong in their children, which is fucked cuz many of the kids are just bored.

floatingslowly 08.07.2009 02:27 PM

a hallmark of Asperger's is talking late.

as is noise-sensitivity, obsessive-like interest in a single-subject (ie: realllllly likes math) and of course, the general lack of empathetic emotions.

but...just because you don't like people, daydream and hate math, doesn't mean that you have Asperger's. a shrink might tell you different, but as Rob mentioned, it's become a catch-all. it's like how most people with pathological chronic pain are lumped into having fibromyalgia.

Doctors HATE to say "I don't know".

schizophrenicroom 08.07.2009 02:29 PM

and they want a label to help them delude themselves further into the idea that they arent just being a lazy parent, it's the kid.

this happened in my house. sean, my bro, has autism and bipolar and a slew of things, but he and my mom and stepdad all together just see it as a good excuse for bad behavior.

welcome to three out of five people in my childhood house!

Rob Instigator 08.07.2009 02:42 PM

or anyone with intestinal issues is lumped in with "IBS - irritable bowel syndrome"

for most people that means the doctor does not know shit but wants to sound like he gave you a proper diagnosis.

Rob Instigator 08.07.2009 02:59 PM

I too have some of that but everyone accuses me of being oblivious, which may be the case, for I am very social.

parts of everyone's brains have different levels of development

Wow, I'm exactly like you, except I haven't read "A Brief History of Time" and I'm good at science.

Rob Instigator 08.07.2009 03:46 PM

all that means is that you are smart and bored with the low-grade bullshit common-denominator education you get in public schools.

I had the same shiat.

Seconded. Looks more like social phobia in my opinion.

asperger's falls onto the austism scale and ADHD does not. it is a specific diagnosis, but i do agree that it is misdiagnosed often because it manifests in behavior and because, and as you mentioned, many behaviors can look like asperger's . of importance- whether a child has asperger's or just something that looks like asperger's... the techniques to deal with them are the same. it's not a disorder that is generally treated with medication. i don't think there's anything wrong with using certain techniques that you know work to deal with certain behaviors... no matter how you want term it.

there is a set scale and it's more or less rated. as with any disease or disorder, it has to be diagnosed by someone extremely knowledgeable.
