Sonic Exploitation
Im a Sonic Youth fan for life...but I have to cringe when I see the new vinyl album in stores for 30dollars plus. BNGE was/is some bullshit. Maybe this is all pseudo-indie Matador and their profiteering, but I see it as straight forwardly ripping off completists and diehard fans. Im sure the next album will see the same bullshitty inflated price, with some "bonus" we can get for throwing down 50 dollars. They make Geffen seem like saints.

Yeah, they're making it difficult for bands like Radiohead to give away their albums for free. Innit?
|
I think it's more of a rip-off for vinyl enthusiasts, and it's been going on for years, and it's more than Matador that do it. But whatcha gonna do - not buy it???? Yeah right!! :)
The only way to protest but still own the thing is to buy it 'used'. Or steal it (not recommended). Shame on those record companies though. |
all 180g or 200 g vinyl costs around $25-30 due to the lack of press4es and the cost of virgin vinyl. It sucks. I agree.
Now, the BEGN thing, I got 4-5 free MP3's including rare live stuff, I got a poster, I got a vinyl of live sonic youth concert, and I got a double 200g vinyl of the newest sonic youth LP. I do not think what I paid was a DEAL, but it was worth it to me, and I consider it an even trade. |
It's only $22 where I am.
$37.99 in the official store... hrm. Wonder if that includes the Battery Park LP? |
record labels ahve seen a spike in vinyl purchases, and while it is actual;ly negligible (like less than 5% of the total sales market) they know it is growig and steady, so they have bumped up the prices of vinyl accordingly to try and make more money fof it.
ten years ago the re-issue 180g vinyl was selling for $15-$20. Now it is $25-30 quite a big bump not just accountable by inflation. |
I bought my Eternal from the official store, paid $48.04 with shipping and had to send it back because Kung Fu doesn't care enough to put some thought into their packing. Three out of the four corners were bent and both records had broken through both the inner sleeves and the album cover. They sent another one, didn't put it in bubble wrap or do anything to protect the corners and this one arrived in a little better shape, but not much. I really couldn't stomach having to send another one back with detailed instructions for them how to pack it. For that much money I expect nothing less than a perfect album. Really dissapointing because they have a lot of cool SY vinyl that I want. I just have to find another way to get it. Oh yeah, it didn't include the Battery Park EP.

I like when Sonic Youth make 2 CD's...
...DEEZ NUTZZZ!!! |
is the battery park album any good?
|
it is GREAT
|
I thought the whole BEGN was a good transaction/value. The battery park LP sounds amazing and was well done. The whole mp3 was a little over the top.
Get a job so you can work for this shit yo' More bands should make the album as much as an event as this... |
On eBay, I think I paid $40 (Canadian) for the double vinyl, and $25 (US) for the Battery Park LP.

Which is really a terrible idea for the long term. If people decide that vinyl is too expensive and stop buying physical media entirely (I won't buy CDs at all) they're outta business. |
true.

I think they should have at least included mp3s of pay no mind, no garage, and burning shame in BEGN.
all of these high prices being quoted on the vinyl version are pretty outrageous. Last time I checked Sonic Nurse was a double album too, and was pretty much sold at half the price. |
true
fucking ripoffs |
