Their early "hardcore" singles are much better written tunes with some great subtly inventive parts. I don't really like The Chemistry Of Common Life and it kind of shits me that it's considered "valid" beyond the punk/hardcore music media because they have some slow bit's and a flanger pedal. Black Flag slowed down hardcore on "My War" and everyone hated it. 25 years later Fucked Up slow down hardcore, add some trumpets and Pink Floyd-ish bits and everyone loves it.....

Still I think they're a pretty good band.

They don't blow me away, but they're not too bad either. Son The Father is a pretty fuckin' rad song.

yeah i bought that newest album, it certainly didn't blow me away. it was okay. it was funny i was looking at the linear notes before i listened to it and was reading the lyrics and i was like "wow this shit is going to be amazing" but then it wasn't, you cant really understand them. which brings me to another point. what's the point of writing really great lyrics if they are not decipherable in the song? like early blood brothers comes to mind.

I'd recommend this CD, "Epic In Minutes" over anything else. It collects all their 7"s and demos up until they started doing limited edition 12" in differenct languages n shit. "Police", "Litany", "Baiting The Public", all great Poison Idea-esque hardcore tunes with some killer almost-glam, hard rockin' guitar bits. From there they get a bit silly, I mean I love the idea of bands pushing the boundaries of hardcore but there's a reason why noones put a whistling solo in a punk song before.

Re: "what's the point of writing really great lyrics if they are not decipherable". Darby Crash wrote amazing lyrics but man, image him singing in a decipherable way. That'd be balls. I see what you mean but sometimes it can add mystery I guess...

I just started listening to them, but I think I really like them.

I don't really care if I can understand lyrics myself.
