angel'in heavy syrup

All girl 90s Japanese trio that play sort of psychedelic shoegaze type rock music. I found out about them through their Morita Doji covers (who is a brilliant Japanese folk musician, which you should listen to cause she's absolutely astounding) and they have a very sweet sound to them. Trying to listen to all their stuff.

I have their CD "IV," which I have always enjoyed. Excellent musicianship, veering into the more progressive end of psychedelia/space rock. Underrated for sure.

Slap Happy Humphrey was the band that covered Morita Doji. Only Mineko of Angel'in Heavy Syrup was involved. That album is utterly unique:

AiHS was/is a fantastic group... there's been no official break-up, but the span since IV and the fact that Fusao Toda plays with Acid Eater now probably means something.

atsonicpark 09.21.2009 08:11 PM

yeah, been into 'em for a while, good band.

Satan 09.21.2009 08:12 PM

they're pretty cool, they don't totally put me to sleep like most shoegaze bands

shoewhat?

Satan 09.21.2009 08:14 PM

theyre definitely a band that would get thrown in that shitpile genre

Savage Clone 09.21.2009 08:16 PM

Um, no.

Satan 09.21.2009 08:18 PM

im not saying they are shoegaze. they're not boring enough.

im saying some dumbfuck in an office at rolling stone/nme/spin/some other fuckery would throw them in the fire with fucking slowdive

this record is kind of boring the shit out of me though.

only because the recent proliferation of 'nu-gaze' crap has people generalizing almost as recklessly as they did with the term 'indie' in the 90s

shoegaze has psychedelic roots... but the japanese psychedelic tradition is completely apart from shoegaze, is it not?

i don't really see that much in common with say, flower travelling band or anything like that.
it's partly in the production though. it sounds like a lush record or some BS because of that.

i'm revoking this statement

enjoy your thread, i'm going to listen to real psychedelic music.

Savage Clone 09.21.2009 08:22 PM

T o my ears, they are almost more "progressive" rock than "psych."

wasn't flower travellin band a commercial venture? i mean stuff like les rallizes denudes.

you just referenced lush. why'd you do that.

because the production is the same as on all those records. this could have been produced and mixed by the same guy who did slowdive's record. tinny, hollow. it SOUNDS like 1995.

they have some neato guitar going on in the background.

but it is unfortunately in the background.

atsonicpark 09.21.2009 08:28 PM

SHOEGAZE, as a genre, is about half-awful shit and half-brilliance. There's a lot of dated-sounding, cheesy, boring, overrated, blah bands that dominate over the genre, but the great stuff is really fucking great.

Of course, I don't think Satan likes Slowdive, which makes me sad.

(weird, I wrote this while doing something else and came back like 5 minutes later and wrote the rest, then posted it, and and I saw that Satan mentioned Slowdive in her post)

i know what you mean, actually, it's just that referencing lush as representative of the 90s shoegaze 'sound' is just like referencing catherine wheel, it made me lol

AiHS's albums were recorded between '91 and '99, so your ear is honest with you
