Farewell Chas and Dave

Music veterans Chas and Dave have split after 35 years together, their agent has announced.

The duo recorded classic household name tunes such as Rabbit, The Sideboard Song and Snooker Loopy.

Bassist and singer Dave Peacock is to retire from the music business following the death of his wife Sue from lung cancer in July.

Pianist Chas Hodges said he will honour their touring commitments under the new name of Chas And His Band.

Chas and Dave's debut album One Fing 'n' Anuvver was released in 1975 and they went on to have eight top 40 singles.

The much-loved artists played the Glastonbury music festival in 2005 and have influenced modern artists like The Libertines.

Damn, they were going to play in my local.

i've said it once and I'll say it again, the bit when Hodges and Peacock belt out the line "Well I aint gonna be made to look a fool no more" in 'Aint No Pleasing You' is a truly great pop moment.

fuck! first the sugar babes now these guys! british music is being rocked to the core.

demonrail666 09.23.2009 01:28 PM

not a single original member of the sugababes remains. They're now officially the english drifters.

Glice 09.23.2009 01:29 PM

I thought Napalm Death were the English Drifters? Or did they go back to being Napalm Death when Barney re-joined?

MellySingsDoom 09.23.2009 01:33 PM

Chas and Dave were the guv'nors of the English music scene, no mistake. Are the gays allowed to like this pure essence of Rockney?

Glice 09.23.2009 01:48 PM

Let's see - are they hammy/ shite/ hopelessly out of fashion?

Three ticks and they've got their friend of Alice membership card.

demonrail666 09.23.2009 02:41 PM

"friend of Alice membership card"?

Glice 09.23.2009 03:13 PM

Friend of Alice - it's a local variation on friend of Dorothy. It might even be so local as to be that a mate of mine mis-understood when I described someone as friend of Dorothy, but it's stuck now.

If you still don't know, a friend of Dorothy is on the bus. Or enjoys comfortable shoes. Or bowls from the pavillion end. Or is a crafty buthcher (that is, one who gets his meat round the back).

demonrail666 09.23.2009 03:19 PM

i'd not heard of the friend of Dorothy thing either, to be honest. the comfortable shoes bit clarifies it nicely though.

jon boy 09.23.2009 03:20 PM

chas and dave played on the same bill as led zepelin once. thats living alright.

Uphill gardener is popular as a euphemism round these parts. I found out today that 'closet' in Latin is also a pun on heart; mis-translations of the Bible have it that people accept Jesus 'into their closet'. I haven't verified if this is where 'out of the closet' comes from (it would seem more likely that one's first thought on what that could mean would be more right) but it's an idea I'm going to mull upon.
