Recommend me some ESSENTIAL southern hip-hop
OK, so I'm big into my hip-hop at the moment, but it's a pretty new thing for me (only like 10 months or so), and I've basically been almost entirely limited in my listening to East Coast stuff. I don't know why, but I just haven't clicked with the other stuff yet. I'm just now finding myself able to connect with some more West stuff now, such as the Hieroglyphics crew stuff, but still that's kind of not my thing yet. However, I've got a decent list of stuff to check out there, so advice isn't so much needed right now...
Southern stuff though, I'm completely in the dark on really. I like Outkast a lot, but other than that I really haven't been able to get into any of the other big Southern people that everyone seems to love. The joys of Lil' Wayne, Gucci Mane, whatever are just wholly lost on me right now. However, I really would like to change this, and even if I don't like what I've heard so far, I'm willing to give anyone a chance so I can least have an informed opinion on them. Bring on the recommendations! A proviso: Please, please don't recommend big lists of people. What I want here really a short list of specific essential albums or mixtapes than I can really spend some time with. I'm only going to have time to get like 5-10 albums max and really listen to them closely, so yeah, if each poster could not recommend more than like 3-5 absolutely fantastic albums to check out that would be ideal. Thanks all! |

And I have to stress that Tha Carter II is my favorite southern rap album (that I've heard). |
Carter II really is amazing. It was one of the ones that really made me "get it."

I caught him some years back on a local show here called STREET FLAVA got hooked |
he's hilarious. So filthy, but so smooth. I think he's my wife's favorite rapper. Which is hilarious if you knew my wife.

OK, well starting out with Tha Carter 2. Once I've digested that I'll try out the 3 Six Mafia and some Geto boys, and see how I'm doing. I like the Banner and Goodie Mob that I've heard before too, so maybe I'll add them to the list...
|
Earl, PLEASE check the video for Banner's "Cadilac On 22's"...
...but definitely listen/digest/love CARTER II. It's serious. |

I'll work on changing your opinion on Lil Wayne. Check out the following songs: We Be Steady Mobbin'[no official release yet to my knowledge] BM Jr[The Carter] Bring it Back[The Carter] Stuntin' like my Daddy[Like Father, Like Son] You ain't Know[Like Father, Like Son] Tha Mobb[Carter II] Hustler Musik[Carter II] Let the Beat Build Bitch[Carter III] Where The Cash At[Dedication Gangsta Grillz] I highly recommend that everyone own the first two carters. The albums are nearly flawless. Also, Michael Watts Chopped And Screwed versions of any of the songs on the first two carters are fucking genius. Seriously. I'm so hot you probably catch a tan around this muthafucka this rap game, I got my hand around this muthafucka yeah I said game but I ain't playin' around this muthafucka yeah I'm the best to ever do it bitch and you the best at never doin' shit if you the shit then I'm sewerage try me and I'll have your people readin' eulogies |

All thrown sloppily together in one folder inside of another, etc but whatever. I've been drinking the sip since I woke up. I'm real sick but if I get bored today I may even put together a best of Lil Wayne according to me but it sounded real difficult considering how many Lil Wayne albums I have. The Carter II Bonus Disc(mixed by Michael Watts) The Block is Hot Bring it Back Get off the Corner On The Grind Fuck the World BM J.R. Fireman Go DJ This is the Carter ft. Mannie Fresh 500 Degrees Like Father, Like Son bonus disc Stuntin' Like My Daddy Brown Paper Bag Neighborhood Superstars I'm Ridin' Shooter And I also threw in We Be Steady Mobbin' because that song is absurd. |
