After silence, that which comes nearest to expressing the inexpressible is music.
Music is essentially useless, as life is.
In terms of things that are essential(food, shelter etc),music can easily be described as useless. It's impossible to imagine a world without it though.
That is rather nihilistic is it not? If life is valueless, then by default nothing has any meaning, since the effect of something having zero value negates its significance; and since also everything that we speak of and communicate is essentially about life that means that the words that I am typing and the words that you are typing are, paradoxically, meaningless, thereby negating your statement that life is valueless. So by saying that life is useless, you have actually proved, with those words, that life has value beyond worth that is superficial, since only a life that has value can ever produce a statement like, 'life is useless'. Dig?

Many a mickle mack a muckle, surely?
The statement 'life is useless' is a very futile one.Why not commit suicide then? What's the point of dwelving into a useless existence?
"to a kid looking up to me, life and nothing but bitches and money"
life is very pointless, i would have so many more friends if i didnt waste all my time listening to music, it ruined my life. i would stab myself but i dont know where the knife drawer is....oh well...
When life is wasted in heedless luxury and spent on no good activity, we are forced at last by death's final constraint to realize that it has passed away before we knew it was passing.
Nobody realises that 'life is useless', everyone thinks life is efficient, productive and enriching. Not until the restraints of the final sleep begin to confine us within the stifiling realms of eternity do we even begin to wonder at the futility of life.

Silence is overrated. It's really just for the artsy types like John Cage. I much prefer music.
But music is definitely not useless. It conveys emotion, which is one of the most useful (and harmful) things in existence. |
silence is music, unless your definition of music begins and ends with james blunt
silence is the absence of sound. but when you take away the tones and the rhythms and the notes and the melodies, you are left with anything but an absence of sound. i think life fills up the silence with immense noise. noises of life and living. just be quiet for a while and listen. switch everything and don't say or do anything but listen. the silence will be revelatory.
Either everything is useful or everything is useless.
just like silence or music. actually life has value regardless. it's up to us to work towards realising this value.... it is the extensions of life, like art and music which have no value, except that which we give it. that's why art is subjective, as is music, and why people get so defensive about it.
Art is not subjective. That's only your opinion.
...You see what I did there? Cause it- Eh, nevermind. Kids and your...skull-banging music... |
Haha...
silence is as important as sound cause without it we have no base level
how can a pinter paint on something which isnt plain how can a bulider build on something which isnt clear ok, enuff of profound paulybee. silence is great and life aint futile! |
