computer nerds: please help / Windows 7 = sloooow downloads
got a new compy recently. Windows 7. I skipped Vista, so it's a new layout for me. I use a Dynex Wireless card to connect. Comcast highspeed cable modem. Browsing speeds are decent. No problems watching youtube for instance. But if I try to download ANYTHING it's soooooooo slow! I mean, I'm getting a download rate of like less than 30kbps. That's KB's not MB's!!!
My wife's laptop (XP) is not experiencing the same thing, so I can't help but conclude that this is a Windows 7 (or Internet Explorer 8 -- or both) issue. ANyone have experience with this issue? |
Do you both have different ip addresses?
Providers have many ways of making your download experience a nightmare when prompted. New laws are being implemented as we speak.. |
my downloads were fine until I got the new computer though. Same provider and all?
|
That could be the problem right there.
Maybe they are trying to tell you something. Seriously, keep a low download profile, or your access to files could halt to a stop. Just what I've been hearing lately. |
I was trying to download a jpg. It was 3MB. If that's a high download profile...
|
Do you clean your registry? I have heard that speeds up downloads.
|
It all adds up at the end of the day. Music, photos, etc.
I might be wrong about this, but I've come across it a little to often lately. They start off by subtly slowing down your downloads and then suddenly out of nowhere.. poof! It's all over the internet. |
update the driver for wireless device.
recycle modem and router. reboot. get back to us. |
Ps: It's referred to as "Protocol Agnostic” network management,
which basically means "You wait in line" till they decide when you can come back into the classroom. It's a new trend amongst providers. |
At least your effing dynex device actually works. I had a wireless doohickey that totally hosed one of my computers and never actually worked. I suspect that is the issue.
Can you hook up a wire and see what happens? |

I understand yr fear of the rise of the robots, but I just tried on hers and it downloaded the same 3MB pic in about a 2 seconds. And honestly, there's not much to add up. I haven't been downloading much of anything in months. My wife has never downloaded a single thing, so... MY GUESS IS that Windows 7 isn't keen on the driver for my WiFi card that's installed on my desktop (a Belkin device that has no updated Win7 driver). |
plug computer directly into modem and see if the problem ceases.
if not, uninstall driver and then try reinstalling. or buy a new wifi device... |

so yeah, new WiFi might be the answer. |
I meant reinstalling the old driver.
my son connects via a crappy Belkin USB stick and Win7, so it should work. |

okay so if anyone cares, I figured it out. My wifi card had no Win7 drivers. I got a new wifi card with Win7 drivers and I'm golden. Thanks all for trying to help.
