final cut or imovie, depending on what i want to do.

VirtualDub.

It's like 600kbs, free, and does EVERYTHING.

^^ this is a great program. i haven't used it for years, but it's great. though as far as i recall it's linear editing, which makes things a bit more difficult when working with long projects. still, for $0, you can't ask for a more powerful editor.

i use avid media composer, costs a fuckload unless you get an academic edition, still it's very picky with the hardware, but it fucking rules once you get it going. it's a tank. i wouldn't recommend it unless you're going to get paid for using it.

Grass Valley Edius and Sony Vegas.

I'm thinking of buying a Mini to run Final Cut. I don't believe its a truly great product but certainly a decent one. And every effing job on craigslist seems to need it. Of I should at least take or course or something.

I've heard complaints that Apple has been dumbing it down--hiding some previously easy functions.

Sony Vegas 9 - I would never use anything else...except for maybe Vegas 10 whenever it comes out.
