swedish death metal

Im referering to the sludgy stockholm stuff not the more melodic gothenburg sound, It kind of relates to thurston's coments about black metal with bands who can barely play.

anyone else into it? ive been listening to karnarium alot lately.

I don't know a lot about scandinavian metal music, except the famous song 'in the shadows' by the rasmus. there's a french song from 1988 who is 'sludgy' in my opinion. it's 'la ronde triste' by mylène farmer. Although the title is in French, the text is in English. The music is throbbing and lyrics evoke suicide and death (wikipedia)

i guess the stuff i know is more the gothenburg stuff, got any good stockholm recommendations as i prefer sludge to melody hands down?

ondskan 07.23.2010 12:45 PM

Sludgy Stockholm stuff? Dude...

En-fucking-tombed.

Essential albums would be:
Clandestine 1991
Wolverine Blues 1993
To Ride, Shoot Straight and Speak the Truth 1997
Inferno 2003
Serpent Saints - The Ten Amendments 2007

Also: check out Dismember.

ondskan 07.23.2010 12:49 PM

Might wanna check out Unleashed and Death Breath also.

I like Entombed a lot, but to me they gave up the death metal genre a long time ago (after Clandestine).
Then they turned, uh.., industrial/rock/metal (and better).

Well... they turned to more a rock'n'rolly sound, which is clearly hearable in To Ride...

Maim

Bastard Priest

Morbus Chron

For me theres more personality in guys who arnt techy but play with loads of emotion, its not like a music teacher showing off. which to me is what most modern death metal is.

Yeah, I totally forgot Morbus Chron, they're awesome. Maim also.

You guys should also check out Carnage, old-school Stockholm-death.

ondskan 07.24.2010 10:36 AM

And, of course, Sportlov.

batreleaser 07.24.2010 11:46 AM

At the Gates is way better than anything else in that scene.

GeneticKiss 07.24.2010 04:20 PM

Why has no one mentioned Meshuggah yet? After all, they've popularized the 8-string guitar. Can't get much sludgier than that...

mrb 07.25.2010 05:13 AM

meshuggah are way to techy and arnt a death metal band. they even fight the tag themselves.
