any "memories from a festival"?

sonicl 07.13.2006 07:25 AM

I'm so torn on the Sisters. I saw them a few years ago (probably ten) and was a little bit underwhelmed. I think I was expecting something wonderful, and it was just a rock band. But it was still a rock band that knocked the socks off most others.

"Some Kind of Stranger" has been a permanent fixture in my top ten tracks for something like the last twenty years. It's the intro - it gets me every time.

candymoan 07.13.2006 07:29 AM

know exactly what you mean..
"first and last and always" is one of the masterpieces that keep going for an entire lifetime.. the songs are always powerful, and one tends to burn on them after a while..
but i always keep going back to it...

And yes I believe in what we had
But words got in the way
And only yesterday
As I was leaving
Lord knows I've tried to say but I've
Heard a million conversations
Going where they've been before
Seen the way that careful lingers
Undecided at the door

And all I know for sure
All I know for real
Is knowing doesn't mean so much
When placed against the feeling
The heat inside
When bodies meet
When fingers touch

All my words are secondhand and
Useless in the face of this
Rationale and rhyme and reason
Pale beside a single kiss
And I've heard so many things I
Fail to understand at all
I'd settle anytime for
Unknown footsteps
In the hall outside

And all I know for sure
All I know for real
Is knowing doesn't mean so much
When placed against the feeling
The heat inside
When bodies meet
When fingers touch

Because the world is cruel and
Promises are broken
Don't try to tell me
Anything don't try to tell me
You'll be true to me you know the
Real truth is never spoken

And I know the world is cold but
If you hold on tight to what you
Find you might not mind too much though
Even this must pass away and
Memories may last for years but
Names are just for souvenirs
Some kind of angel let me
Look into your eyes

Don't give me whys and wherefores
Reason or surprise
I don't care for words that don't belong
And I don't care what you're called
Tell me later if at all
I can wait a long long time
Before I hear another love song

Come here I think you're beautiful
My door is open wide
Some kind of angel come inside

Come here I think you're beautiful
I think you're beautiful beautiful
Some kind of angel come inside

Come here I think you're beautiful
I think you're beautiful
Some kind of angel come inside

I prefer them with the classic 4 piece pre-Sisterhood/Mission lineup. After that they really don't do it for me, but yes, First And Last And Always is incredible. I love a lot of the stuff before that as well.

Hip Priest 07.13.2006 09:04 AM

First and Last and Always, Floodland and Vision Thing are all excellent LP's, especially Floodland in my opinion. There's a track called Neverland (a fragment) - it's short, but I recall reading that there was a long (11 or 12 minutes I think) version of it. Is that true? Was it ever released? Flood I and Flood II are great tracks.

The Sisters of Mercy videos are on youtube, you know.

candymoan 07.13.2006 10:02 AM

one can always rely on the priest...
the videos on youtube, yes.. the concept is usually, "we'll wear black.. the background should be black.. and there shouldn't be too many lights.."

regarding extended versions, you can always find surprising mixes from demos or live shows.. my latest find was the demo version of "anaconda" from 1983 on thesoundofindie.com..

I like fog machines, leather and vague silhouettes on stage. No problems with that aesthetic at all. I can even manage to look past the aviator sunglasses, especially as he was wearing them when they were not even remotely cool.

Norma J 07.13.2006 06:50 PM

MY girls sister saw them in London a few weeks or so ago, and loved it. HAHA.

max 07.14.2006 01:07 AM

Andy Eldritch knows his shit and his work is amazing. TSOM are just BRILLIANT STUFF. my very fave line up was the FLOODLAND one which had Patricia Morrison on bass. damn that LP is amazing. WONDERLAND creeps me out. powerful tunes as well like LUCRETIA keep spinning in my head constantly. wish i'll see them sooner or later. long live the sisters.

max 07.14.2006 01:08 AM

oh and... when you don't see me... it's not a matter of time or going to grow... i don't exist when you don't see me...

_slavo_ 07.14.2006 06:21 AM

seen them last month.
it was really really really really bad.

I mean, they were opening for Depeche Mode, and I guess Sisters of Mercy are not the right band to play in front of 30.000 people crowd

it was painful.

noah 07.14.2006 11:43 AM

i love the old shit. alice, reptile house, all that shit

max 07.14.2006 03:38 PM

fuck depeche mode.

_slavo_ 07.17.2006 02:07 AM

krastian 07.17.2006 02:14 AM

He he....yeah. Even though max seems cool.

GeneticKiss 07.17.2006 09:37 PM

Too bad they don't tour on the east coast of the US...

Secret Boys 07.17.2006 09:46 PM

andrew eldricht loves ABBA

Angel Dust 07.18.2006 03:35 AM

Saw them this year. One of my favorite bands, but they weren't good live, I think the House of Blues wasn't mixing their songs right, the levels were totally off. I don't think it was their fault per se, but it was a disappointment.

However, they did play the best songs for this tour, "When You Don't See Me", "Lucretia My Reflection", and some other popular ones I can't remember. It was just a bummer about their sound issues...

Their opening band, The Warlocks, totally blew me away. Excellent set and great tones.

sonicl 07.18.2006 03:44 AM

If you go by the covers that SoM do, Eldritch loves loads of bands. Off the top of my head:

Abba (Gimme gimme gimme a man after midnight)
Pink Floyd (Comfortably numb)
Dolly Parton (Jolene)
Rolling Stones (Gimme Shelter)
Bob Dylan (Knockin' on heavens door)
Velvet Underground (Sister ray)
Suicide (Ghost rider)
Hot Chocolate (Emma)
The Stooges (1969)
