the only response is the same one I always have
ARRRGGGHHHH!!!! and then put on Death valley 69 and imagine, just imagine, you crushing their skulls while the guitar blares and the screaming starts! |
![]() i totally agree, i had this for years at school and it never ends, i just started a new job and so i have had everyone asking me "so...what music do you like" to which i reply "like american indipendant stuff" then they usually say "oh like rock music, like the red hot chilli peppers?" then i would say "umm they're ok, but i like bands like ummm sonic youth and elliott smith and the flaming lips" and they say "sonic youth?, who are they?, Elliott who?, oh the flaming lips, i hate that song they do y'know the new one" then i walk away. |
here's an idea. put sonic death onto your mp3 player and tell the rhcp guy to listen to it . . . only turn it up insanely loud and tell him to listen to the whole thing. see how long he lasts. (if you don't have sonic death confusion is sex will do in a pinch.)

I've never had problems with that. I can usually stand my ground in that stuff. I am not the least bit offended if someone doesn't like my music, and I respect others' tastes. So people tend to respect my music. If someone likes Green Day, that's cool. I used to like them. They can listen to what they want, and if they enjoy it, more power to 'um. But I'm not gonna agree with them because they say so, and they know it.

the worst part is.... that one of the other people at work told this girl there that i like indipendant music then she spent half an hour talking to me about the baby shambles. eeeeewwwwww!
|
I hate when people ask me "What kind of music do you play?"
Worst question ever. Usually I will say "Psychedelia or Space Rock," which leads to some kind of process of elimination that usually leaves them with the impression that my music sounds like Pink Floyd. Not the worst thing, of course, but still way off. |
I bought a Rilo Kiley CD the other day, and the clerk started going on about all these other bands that I don't like, who are supposedly related, like everything is the same. Same thing happened when I bought a Sonic Youth CD, they started going on about grunge. I just want my damn CD. I don't care about your bands.
|
when people ask me what sonic youth are like i usually say 'experimental' because its so vague that they get confused and dont ask anymore questions.
|
luckily I have not had that problem, though I have been asked about my music taste by a metal head. I told him I liked alternative and left it at that. Anothe rsimilar event happened with one of my associates in my visual arts program. I showed him my cd collection, and he didn't know ANY of my bands, even though I had Radiohead, Smashing Pumpkins, Matthew Good (who is pretty big in Canada) in there (though he did ask "you like 80's music?" when he saw one of my Joy Division cds), which I thought was wierd because he listened to mainstream rock stations. Of Course he was one of those Evanescence and Seether fans. I am curious as to how he would react to Sonic Youth
|
its always funny to see peoples first reactions to sonic youth.
|
Blare the Jesus and Mary Chain (preferrebly "In A Hole" or "You Trip Me Up") at him. That always works good. And he'll never bother you again.
|
the thing i hate most is when i tell them about bands i like, and then jsut because they have never heard of them they'll say things like. "you think you're so cool cause you listen to underground music" or some shit like that. it drives me insannnnneeeeeeeeeeeeee

I got the same when I bought thurston's phsychic heart. The chick tell's me " how does he sound?" I just say experimental. and she shut up. |
I used to care about the musical tastes of everyone around me, but I've since given that up.
What's harder is when people ask me what kind of music I play...I usually have to think for a moment, and then tell them "all kinds", becuz it's true...I have written straightforward alt-rock songs, a few garage-y type songs, a funk song, some acoustic songs, a handful of thrashy metalish songs (although closer to metal as defined by groups like Ministry circa 1990-92)...I try to find a unifying thread, but I really can't. |
My class is filled with that kind of people.
Next schoolyear first day i'm taking my M16 to school and gonna shoot every motherfucker! Elephant rip-off LOL |

Very similar to what I've been thinking recently. I've taken to describing the music I listen to as "psychedelic punk". It works for me, but probably leaves the person I've been speaking to none the wiser. |
