Beat Generation Poets.

who do you like? i quite enjoy John Wieners, Philip Lamantia and (as you can see) Peter Orlovsky, (as well as the obvious Ginsberg, Burroughs..not really poet, but writer... whatever) any writers/poets/artists you like fromt his era?

golden child 07.13.2006 11:11 PM

my wiener is a poet too.

k-krack 07.13.2006 11:17 PM

seriously? show some poems! wiener poems are the second best kind!

krastian 07.13.2006 11:17 PM

Gary Snyder rules all.

I don't know if i have read or heard any of him. (I have this box set "Howls Raps and Roars," and i have researched a select few). I'll check him out.

He was friends with Kerouac and crew......he is Japhy Ryder in the Dharma Bums. Check out the Gary Snyder Reader.

burroughs, ginsberg, kerouac, bukowski, orlovsky, mcclure, i would put henry miller in this much but he is earlier

Cantankerous 07.14.2006 12:14 AM

william s. burroughs and ginsberg are my favorites.
kerouac kind of pisses me off.

terminal pharmacy 07.14.2006 12:25 AM

burroughs is my all time favourite author, never read anything that has excited me more than a william burroughs novel

static-harmony 07.14.2006 01:02 AM

I would say burroughs is a better writer than kerouac but I could see why kerouac would be way on top. I really liked junky by burrough's. My favorite poet is ginsberg.

k-krack 07.14.2006 01:08 AM

oh shit, how did i ever forget Kerouac!!!??? (add him to the list up there). i just just just finished Naked Lunch. (the first one i have read of his) what next?

golden child 07.14.2006 06:27 PM

never read anything that bored me more than a burroughs novel.

Hip Priest 07.14.2006 06:29 PM

I like Gregory Corso's self-penned epitaph:

Spirit
is Life
It flows thru
the death of me
endlessly
like a river
unafraid
of becoming
the sea

krastian 07.14.2006 11:26 PM

^Yeah man....that reminds me a lot of Snyder.

afterthefact 07.15.2006 12:19 AM

I only recently got into poetry itself, so this may be an obvious choice, since I haven't delved too deep into it yet, but I like Saul Williams... any other suggestions for beginners?

krastian 07.15.2006 12:32 AM

^William Carlos Williams....drunken suggestion, but yeah.

that's fine, cause it was a drunken question.

I didn't like Naked Lunch. A waste of time.

Anyway, Kerouac and Ginsberg are pretty much the best of the beats. I would add Gary Snyder, but I haven't read enough to really say.

HaydenAsche 07.16.2006 06:43 PM

Bradley Hathaway is the worst poet ever. I saw him live Friday night and was thoroughly pissed off.
