some current bands' fascination for all things ''beach''
Beach House, Danger Beach, Wavves' beachy imagery, the way it makes a frequent appearance in quite a few of these lo-fi, dreamy (I refuse to use the correct hipstergogic terminology), home-made videos etc. Your guess is as good as mine.

tired old tropes brought out of the rock closet every 15-20 years.
the beach thing and the three-part harmony thing. I do not get it. |
Yeah, this was a popular trend about a year ago, with Sun Araw, Wet Hair, Ducktails and all that stuff, which people called "beach pop" or something (and "surf punk" sometimes, for some unexplained reason) but I don't know if it's popular anymore. The whole thing was about them sitting around at the beach and smoking pot, playing guitar/synths/drum machines onto a tape that is subsequently buried in a sand castle, and being lazy. It's kinda like slacker rock but for beach bums, I guess?
The beach is the greatest place in the world, so it's understandable, the only thing that confuses me is when people call Wavves and stuff "surf punk", when there is nothing surfy whatsoever about their sound. I remember checking out Real Estate because someone described them as "surfy" and it just sounded like boring indie crap. Anyway, that BEST COAST album "Crazy For You" is really cool, as far as recent stuff that seems obsessed with the beach. I mean, it's really really simple, but it's got some neat melodies and simple 60's pop structures. But yeah, beaches are neat, every Takeshi Kitano film has a beach in it. |
beaches rule, but the only musicc video I ever saw that included beach footage that also ROCKED THE FUCK OUT is this one.

I just call Wet Hair "sounds like Spectrum."
(not an insult) |

I don't see/hear the beach thing with Wet Hair. Admittedly, I haven't listened to them in ages.

apparently that's because it's one of the only places you can go in japan that isn't filled with people |
And what about this new Beach Boys band? California this, California that.... They sound like the damn autistic kid from The Wizard.

Yeah... he's given multiple reasons, but I think that's the official one. I like how it's a place of peace for his characters. (though he turns that idea on its head in Takeshis'!)
Interestingly, Achilles and the Tortoise has no beach scene... BUT in the conversation between him and his prostitute daughter, there is a highly visible painting of a beach. Perfect. |

Not to forget the Citizen Kane of beach-based pop promos. |

not really, there are lots of forests and hills there too. |
This is a quote from a students' essay my friend was grading- " A boy hit me so I say to him, YOU SUN ON THE BEACH!"

I like Dirty Beaches.

who doesn't like the beach or weed?
say what you want about san diego (religious freaks, old rich republicans, flip flops, etc..), but you can't really disagree that sitting on those beautiful beaches and smoking weed is exactly what content means. Ive already given up and decided to move there in two months. |
