Gawker Media?

has anyone else had trouble logging into their email account lately? i keep getting a message from yahoo saying my email account has been compromised and that i should change my password. i haven't changed it yet as i thought it was a trap but after finally logging into my email i found i have this new mail:

Quote:

This weekend we discovered that Gawker Media's servers were compromised,
resulting in a security breach at Lifehacker, Gizmodo, Gawker, Jezebel,
io9, Jalopnik, Kotaku, Deadspin, and Fleshbot. As a result, the user name
and password associated with your comment account were released on the
internet. If you're a commenter on any of our sites, you probably have
several questions.

We understand how important trust is on the internet, and we're deeply
sorry for and embarrassed about this breach of security. Right now we
are working around the clock to improve security moving forward. We're
also committed to communicating openly and frequently with you to make
sure you understand what has happened, how it may or may not affect you,
and what we're doing to fix things.

This is what you should do immediately: Try to change your password in
the Gawker Media Commenting System. If you used your Gawker Media
password on any other web site, you should change the password on those
sites as well, particularly if you used the same username or email with
that site. To be safe, however, you should change the password on those
accounts whether or not you were using the same username.

Gawker Media

i've never heard of this Gawker before or any of the sites mentioned so i'm guessing this is a con....?

ploesj 12.14.2010 07:33 AM

it appears to be true... gawker is a media network with a few different sites, people need an account to comment and you can link it to your facebook or e-mail.

stu666 12.14.2010 07:38 AM

thanks for replying ploesj, did you get this too?

i'll change my email password then and hope that fixies it.

EVOLghost 12.14.2010 07:50 AM

yah, I read about this on Kotaku. but I'm not registered...so no worries here.

stu666 12.14.2010 07:55 AM

i didn't know i was registered? i never heard of it before. i've had the same email password since i started up my account with no problems until now.

the entire user database was dumped and posted on the internet sunday.

google search a 256 bit sha hash of your username or email.

ha!

stu666 12.14.2010 08:23 AM

hey verme, while you're here i have a quick question for you. in my recycle bin i've got a small .vob file 36.0kb in size and i can't delete it. if i try to delete it then my pc starts slowing down and i can't open any folders and have to restart my pc. if i just leave it alone then i don't have any problems. i can delete everything else with no problems. i had this same problem once before and it seemed to disappear after about a year but now it's back. any ideas?

verme (prevaricator) 12.14.2010 08:48 AM

weird. i don't know. maybe it's being used by some process? even when you do a shift+delete (skipping the recycle bin)?

stu666 12.14.2010 09:02 AM

you mean try and restore it then do shift+delete? i will try this but i don't know where it'll be restored to. i suppose i'll have to search for it...

i'm not too bothered though because as long as i don't try to delete it from my recycle bin i don't have any problems. i've done a virus scan and nothing is found.

stu666 12.14.2010 09:17 AM

i can't restore it either, it seems like i only have to look at the file or hover the pointer over it and my pc freaks out. oh well i've lived with it for so long now that i'm used to it. if i want to clear my recycle bin i know i will have to restart my pc too.

received the exact same without being registered at any of these sites

stu666 12.14.2010 10:09 AM

thanks

verme (prevaricator) 12.14.2010 10:40 AM

yeah, consider it a feature.
hah

it might be a simple corrupted file or perhaps bad allocation, corrupted data structure or some windows™ shite...
i guess i'd just manually mount the partition and remove the specific inode or fileref.

there might be some windows tools to solve this but nothing i can name off my head.

stu666 12.14.2010 11:00 AM

ok, thanks for trying to help anyway.

Tokolosh 12.14.2010 11:50 AM

VOBs are video objects. It came with a VIDEO_TS file that you downloaded or ripped and you probably don't have permission to use it, or delete it.
You'll have to unlock it first.

This should do the trick: http://download.cnet.com/Unlocker/30...html?tag=mncol
