How soon is now?

i've just been listening to The Smiths classic, How soon is now?

how the fuck do you think Johnny Marr gets that kinda "boka boka sound from his geeeetar?
then the big ...meeeeeeeeNOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWW sound?

he really is a cool bloke.

doctor dan 07.24.2006 06:07 AM

the 'boka boka' sound is a tremolo pedal, set with with a high depth. as for the meeeeeeennnnnnnnnnnnnnoooooooooooowwwwww sound, im pretty sure its not guitar but some kind of tape looop or sample. it also sounds like its played backwards, possibly a section of brass music...

porkmarras 07.24.2006 06:20 AM

Inspired by Bo Diddley. How cool is that?

Trasher02 07.24.2006 06:26 AM

Great song. Makes me super depressive.

Rob Instigator 07.24.2006 08:21 AM

The partnership with Morissey was special, there's no doubt. Neither reached the same heights after The Smiths.

'How Soon is Now' was always a grand studio piece, and was never intended to be played live, although they did perform it on stage.

that MEAAAAANNNNNNNNNNNNOOWWWWWW sound is the coolest thing ever

Secret Boys 07.24.2006 10:43 AM

I'm pretty sure they use like 9 amps in that song, and that's why they never play it live

porkmarras 07.24.2006 10:44 AM

I have a live version of it.And Morrisey has been playing it live too.

i know what you mean brother... its fair cool.

bytheriver 07.24.2006 11:23 AM

There was a piece in the NME a while back tackling that very question, I cant remember the specifics, but it was something to do with two amps hooked up and feedingback and some particular settings, the actual moves a slide, I think. if you google it you should be able to find out.

bytheriver 07.24.2006 11:24 AM

I prefered the cover version at the start of charmed, its got a bit more grrr to it.

porkmarras 07.24.2006 11:30 AM

Tatu's version is rather appaling.

You are forgiven.

I love that song. I guess the Smiths hated that song and weren't even going to release it at first. Then they needed an extra track for Meat is Murder so they just threw it on there and it became a huge hit.

The Smiths didn't hate that song at all.Where did you hear that?

doctor dan 07.24.2006 12:29 PM

you can tell a lot of effort went into the production on that song, what with all the overdubs and amp effects described above (whoever posted that thanks). that wouldve taken ages to do, and i doubt theyd put that much effort into a song they didnt like
