Mother Gong

Found a record by this band today. It got me curious bu i didn't buy it because i went for other stuff that got me curious too.Does anyone know them and are they any good?

Savage Clone 08.02.2006 02:07 PM

Gong is far superior to Mother Gong.
Basically, stick to pre-1977 and you're OK, but after that you're treading a dangerous minefield of cheese bombs.

porkmarras 08.02.2006 02:08 PM

I'll have to check on the title and the year.I liked the cover a lot.

Prog rock? Formed 1978. Fairy Tales rated highly, as is Robot Woman. Described variously as eclectic and bizarre. But I've never heard anything by them.

Savage Clone 08.02.2006 02:11 PM

Formed late 60s, actually.
"Robot Woman" is total cheese, except for the package design, which is awesome.

I recommend:

Camembert Electrique

The "Radio Gnome Invisible" trilogy of the LPs Flying Teapot, Angels Egg and You

Gong Est Mort/Vive Gong (live 2xLP)

Floating Anarchy live 1977

One of the few groups to effectively walk the line between psych and prog.

I never realised Mother Gong and Gong were the same. I just assumed one was a shit cop-out load of bollocks and the other (Gong) were fucking ace. I'm more of a fan of Goblin though.

Savage Clone 08.02.2006 05:21 PM

They aren't exactly the same, but they are permutations of one another. Gong itself wasn't "really" Gong a lot of the time either.
Goblin is definitely some coolness.

trance feeeedback 08.02.2006 05:27 PM

What about Acid mothers gong? I have never heard them but I have alway been curious.

Glice 08.02.2006 05:29 PM

Someone sent me Goblin sometime last year. I was most impressed.

You know, I wish someone told me that prog/ psych didn't have to mean listening to Pink 'fucking' Floyd's 'Dark Side of the fucking Moon' when I was younger, I could've made so much more progress. For years, I thought that Krautrock was somehow nothing to do with the whole thing...

Savage Clone 08.02.2006 05:49 PM

I have not heard the AMG collaboration, but reports from the field have been meh. It's hard to know until I hear it for myself though.

Goblin defintely did some cheesy stuff too, but most of their soundtracks are outstanding.

Glice, I can hook you up with some awesome shit in this vein.

Feel free to do so at will. PM me and I'll try and find you some glorious things in return.

Glice 08.02.2006 06:09 PM

Oh, and the AMG show was fucking awesome from where I was sitting.

Toilet & Bowels 08.02.2006 07:08 PM

i saw a version of acid mothers gong play at the spitz.
the report = rubbish!

Phlegmscope 08.02.2006 07:41 PM

I just saw Suspiria, which features soundtrack by the Goblin. It was quite impressive yes, but the music video on the DVD is utmostly fucking cheesy and embarrassing. And think it's modernized version of the song in that video.

after that, i began listening a lot to other krautrock bands and never tried again Gong. i probably should try again one day, thanks for the recommendations...

you can't stop the italian maestro's

i just found a huge amount of goblin and fabio frizzi (he done this tune^^) collaborations on soulseek time to dust the hard-drive down yas

Yeah they did.My favourite Goblin moment(apart from some of the crap they were certainly capable of churning out) is the theme to Profondo Rosso(Deep Red).It used to terrify me as a kid.
