How do I dissuade my good friend...

...from becoming a "counterterrorism specialist"? HOW? Is it unreasonable of me to insist that he will subsumed and corrupted by da system? I mean, I suppose there is a need for people to make sure we have contingency plans in place in case some ass decides to set off a dirty bomb or something, but what is usually done under the guise of counterterrorism and "protecting America" is obscene. There's been an industry made out of it (http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/are-we-safer/). HALP.

It's up to him, really. I considered joining a similar UK-based organisation, but the level of interrogation into my past/ the limitations to bits of my personal life meant I didn't ever send off the form. In retrospect, a sage decision on my part. If he's not bothered by the hoops he'll have to jump through, then it's really his own decision to make.

I would be a fantastic CIA agent. they should hav recruited me for my remote viewing powers alone.

I also have a knack for physics, yet I decided, once remotely viewed, that I did not want to make bombs.

that said, if your friend wants to do it, why stop him? are you a terrorist??

I say yes.

The Watcher 05.09.2011 12:52 PM

You've probably already done it with this thread, I'm sure they're checking his friends and family...... now you just cost your friend a job with benefits and good pay and a really nice pension because you don't share the same world view.......

EVOLghost 05.09.2011 12:57 PM

dude, are you serious? If your "friend" is so insistent to joining in this hackneyed "war on terror" then do you honestly think you will somehow be able to convince him? I think its safe to say he has already been thoroughly convinced otherwise and is then already "subsumed and corrupted"

Yeah, cuz the city organization he might work for is really gonna waste its time trolling a Sonic Youth message board. Get your head out of your ass. he's already gone through the bulk of the major assessments and I imagine he already has some kind of security clearance. and any comprehensive legit background check would paint me as a fairly ordinary lefty and not all that radical. I'm not censoring myself. Ever.

I'm at least going to TRY. I'm fairly certain that he sees it as a stepping stone for a future political career. he's one of those neoliberal "public policy" majors who thinks he has a better opportunity to "reform" things in a counter-terror role rather than as a lawyer. I wouldn't hold it against him, but it's a bit painful when I see an otherwise intelligent person having no problem assimilating into this kind of job.

EVOLghost 05.09.2011 01:43 PM

America loves a good joke, but not when the punchline is.....TERRORISM!

dude, telsa69 is the silly one who brings all those bag-o-wire up in here in the first place! There isn't an organization in the entire world, including SYG, that hasn't been infiltrated.. alas alas

Decayed Rhapsody 05.09.2011 01:56 PM

I waterboarded myself in the tub just the other day!

floatingslowly 05.09.2011 01:57 PM

I didn't say that. I was not here.

How are you not corrupted by the system, then? And why do you seem to equal extremism with the right to protest? Curious more than anything. I like you, as it stands.

demonrail666 05.09.2011 04:36 PM

I suppose the real issue isn't one of being corrupted by the system but that of actively promoting it. Although I help prop up an education system that I know is corrupt but keep on cashing the cheques, regardless. Which is probably even worse.

Funny. On another forum I just read: "How do I dissuade my friend from giving me shit about my life choices?"
