Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?
 

I read the book by Philip K. Dick many years ago and watched Blade Runner for the 100th time, last night.
It's one of my top three science fiction novels and the best Tech Noir film I've ever seen.
To me, it's Ridley Scott's best film to date. His depiction of the book is spot on, and the mood he captured, was astounding.
I also love the soundtrack by Vangelis.
This thread is dedicated to Philip K. Dick and his 44 books that are currently in print.

Do any of you guys have any recommendations, as to what I should read next?

Time Out of Joint, The Man in the High Castle, Martian Time Slip, The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch, Counter Clock World, Ubik, A Scanner Darkly and VALIS.

No, they are in chronological order. I think my favourites are Man in the High Castle, Valis and 3 Stigmata....

sorry to disrupt the party with my nerdy ways but wasn't androids just a short story? deckard wants to buy a sheep for his greedy wife so she can keep up with the neighbors. i read it it was ok but not very "colorful" in detail like the blade runner. riddley scott's movie only inspired itself in it and added a ton of stuff-- like the whole plot for instance. the expiration date & what not. and a ton of characters & situations. yes it was awesome, i love that movie, but it had little to do w/ dick's story, except for the character deckard & (vaguely) his line of business.

Androids was a novel and it was a lot different than the movie.

I read Ubik last night and enjoyed the hell out of it. Lately I've been having a hard time losing myself in a good book but that did the trick.

more of a novella maybe? not very long. i remember reading it pretty quick.

I think it's over 200 pages. Everything I've read from have been pretty quick reads. I think his use of amphetamines give his books a smooth language that just breezes right through.

i am pretty sure now that i haven't read this book. it was something else-- did he ever write a short story that ended turning into the novel? (i wonder)

I've read it. It's quite good.

The plot and characters are different, but to me Harrison Ford was the same character as Rick Deckard, in the book. It felt like I was in the same world, with the same mood and apocalyptic look at the future, as described by Philip K. Dick.
Besides, a successful adaptation is almost always going to result in something very different than the source material. There are stories that won't work on the screen, when taken literally from a book.

I read the book in a day and loved it. I haven't seen the movie though.

They have all of William Gibson's at my local library, I'm going to check a few out pretty soon. I wish they had PKD stuff...

did anybody see that other movie he did recently "a scanne darkly" ? I thought it was done really well. It had an interesting plot and trippy graphics although it did have an abrupt ending that kind of threw me off.

i read the man in the high castle and loved it. im about to start Radio Free Albemuth. is that one any good?
