DIY woodworking software

Does anyone know any good software for designing 3d objects made of wood? I'm tired of drawing simple 1d pictures and having to assemble everything in my mind.

AutoCAD, 3Dmax. There are also simpler and cheaper programs out there.
The material of the object you make is irrelevant, because you apply skins later.

Sorry, if they are architecturally based. That is the best I can do b/c that what my profession uses.
