Igby Goes Down!!!!
Does anyone like this movie?
|
yes, i love it
the chick from saving silverman is so hottt |
Good movie, Jeff Goldblum's best performance on film.
|
yeah. i watch it a lot.
|
yeah i enjoyed it. bleak yet funny.
|
I've never seen Shopgirl.
Yeah it was pretty funny, the whole movie reminded me like J.D. Salinger's Cather in the Rye. |
i loveeee it! The Culkin brothers are excellent. this is a great comedy-though quite dark-
|
i didn't like igby goes down at all. i can't even remember what it was about, i only remember wondering what the fuss was about.

Same here. But that applies to so many other movies as well. |
One of my favorite movies. A lot like a modern Catcher In the Rye. But not as good. Just reminiscent.

that was the vibe i got. it's a good movie, though. i really like jason schwartzman (schwarzman?) too. |

i fucking love that movie. reminded me a lot of "catcher in the rye", which i'm sure they at least partially plagiarized. but whatever. it was great. shopgirl was creepy, w/ her shagging grandpa steve martin. the bastard got to caress claire danes' s ass, and what a lovely ass it is. the bastard! -- ps oh static-harmony mentioned catcher in the rye too. hell yes, it's so similar... except there's no phoebe... |
Yeah, there wasn't a phoebe, but I do believe they either plagiarized it or took something off that book.
|
Wow that's pretty harsh to say Steve Martin's character was a pedophile. Clarie Danes both in real life and in the film is in her mid-twenties. I think its a little overboard when someone throws the word pedophile around. If the girl is over the age of twelve is it really pedophilia? Stautory rape, yes, but pedophile I attribute both to anyone younger then thirteen and the sex is non-consentual.

I love Igby Goes Down.
|
I have never seen it.

I liked it...you're right, (there's a) a total Holden Caufield vibe to his (Kiernan's) character...albeit tinged with Tarantino (this was in the pitch or treatmant is a theory). The movie has great production values, & fair-to-great performances throughout...Peet is sweet as well, although I'm sure Parker Posey would have been great in the same role. Jeff Goldblum in such a non-likeable role is noteworthy.
I liked The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys from the same year even more though. |
I haven't seen that one The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys, what is it about?
|
Well, first off, Jodi Foster, or rather, her character, is a big letdown in a way and the narrative storytelling behind the basic motivation of the movie at the beginning is a bit shaky. The production values are passable to good, but definitely not great. Jodi's nun schoolmaster should hve never have had the pegleg. I don't know, maybe it's just me, but if you got Jodi friggin' Foster, you need to do more with her...this character could have been a Nurse Ratchet considering the quality of the rest of the movie, but sadly falls short. D'Onofrio, as the school's director, is great as usual.
These bright young altar boys at a Catholic school make a comic book about Foster's authoritative schoolmarm character and they get caught, but it makes them cool. There's a bit of comic-inspired animation to accompany all this. The ringleader of the group is Kiernan and they go on to pull pranks and have other misadventures. The whole thing (except for the peg-leg) rings exceedingly true, the performances from the kids are exceptional and (caution: quasi-spolier follows) there's an ending you probably will not soon forget in its sheer power. |
Saw it today and loved it.I love the smartass dialogue between Igby and Ollie.
