That's a bloody weird pairing! I'm not quite sure how that's going to work.

EDIT - Mind you, I'm assuming that it would be a violin + guitar combination, and that's not really a safe assumption to make, seeing as Keiji Haino's one of the parties involved.

"apparently tony has been to japan and played with keiji at keiji's house. the only being to have heard this will be keiji's cat. i think it will be a decent pairing. tony will create a wall of drone for keiji to splatter his guitar pyrotechnics across."

he stopped to think about what he was saying. it sounded clumsy and psuedo-bohemian. he decided to shut up for the minute. his ass was uncomfortable on the wooden chair he sat on and the CD he had been listening to, "Lee Ranaldo w. Birchville Cat Motel" had just come to an end.. "what to listen to next?" he wondered to himself aloud

To me that sounds like Haino would be improvising along to a drone. How on earth is he going to acheive that and it not just be a solo improvisation backed by a drone? I suppose any sort of sound can give inspiration to an improviser, but a drone?

I'll be intrigued to hear how it turns out.

That sounds like a once in a lifetime thing.

Perhaps Haino will play hurdy gurdy? Or those Chaos pad things he's so fond of these days? Perhaps Conrad'll bust out some beatbox action while Haino busts some phat rhymes. That'd be ace.

Seriously though; I find having a drone in place to be infinitely preferable and far more improvisationally inspirational than dead air most of the time. I sometimes like to use my friend's "Raagini" (a tanpura machine that produces drones) during solo guitar performances. It's definitely nice to have it there, and gives a surprising amount of textural stimuli to respond to while still maintaining almost total freedom within its key.

I wish I could see this show.

A drone is a drone is a drone, but you have to remember that not all drones are the same. A lot of improvisers are rubbish when they have drones, some of them are very good. I try to avoid them because it's very easy for me to slip into endless eastern scales, and I'm not the most modal of players.

Mr Clone is right though. Indian music indeed. Drones don't necessarily mean static lines.

i was there. life-affirming show. my only gripe was haino not playing enough guitar but when he did pick up his axe, we were afforded a glimpse of infinity...

I hanker to see him do a totally non-guitar show. I've seen him thrice now, and his guitaring is awesomeness beyond awesomeness... but I would like to suffer at the hands of his hurdy-gurdy. Or perhaps a solo percussion. Greedy bastard that I am.

it was mostly vocal accompaniement to Conrad he was doing... with liberal doses of theremin noise... astounding stuff...

he was mostly going for his trademark monolithic violin drone... he was also playing about with some broken drum thing, attacking it with a bow making it squeak...

Hmmm. I've only seen TC once, and he was doing the violin drone thing interspersed with snatches of a "poem" for John Fahey. It put me off ever seeing him again, it was so excruciating.
