VH-1's Top 100 songs of the 80s
oops, it's actually called the "100 Greatest Songs of the 80s"
(i'm also rather unsure why i put the hypen in the topic title) ...prepare to feel outraged (although it's about what one would expect, so don't get too worked up) http://origin.www.vh1.com/shows/dyn/.../episode.jhtml on the plus side, there's lots of videos collected over there (& and a flash version of joust to boot) it's all part of a promotional ramp-up for their up and coming original comedy movie, Totally Awesome. |
So have they only done 100-81? Thats all I could find on the site.

That's truly frightening. |
Yeah, no surprises on the list, really. Everything I would expect to be there. Afterall, Ive seen enough of those stupid vh1 top 100 shows and you kinda get a feel for their limited extent of musical knowledge. Of course, I guess they have to stick with the popular songs to please the masses.

joust fucking slays!

I like that game also. I have all the old school arcade games as MAME roms and the Williams Electronics ones (Stargate, Joust, Moon Patrol, Defender, and Robotron: 2084) are among my favorites. A lot of people I suppose have the Williams "greatest hits" for Playstation. On the subject of MAME, check out this guy's Halloween costume. He's a geek, that's for sure, but this is still pretty cool. http://rluzinski.blogspot.com/2006/1...e-costume.html ![]() ![]() |
i got the reissue on nes back in the day, such an addicting game.
that costume looks like a pain in the ass to carry around. |
27. Kajagoogoo / "Too Shy"
28. Wham! / "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go" Wham! shoulda placed higher than Kajagoogoogoogogogoogogjo |
if you care - you're a fucking dick

wham might make a comeback! oh god they will have to dust off that other guy then. place a missing persons report etc. |
wham's best song is Everything She Wants - so much better than wake me up. Nothing really outrages me about that list, though if Livin' on a Prayer is number one that might be slightly annoying. Seeing that Home Sweet Home isn't in the list, though, gives me hope that it is in the top 20, as well as Relax by Frankie Goes to Hollywood.
|
On what basis is this listing chosen? Is it a public vote, or sales, or numbers of requests? Or is it a list cobbled together by journalists in the pub on a Friday lunchtime? It's not a matter of importance, I'm just wondering.
I'd be interested to see a UK version of the "100 Greatest Songs of the 80s" list and compare it to the US one. |
I don't think they would differ much.
|
I'm not so sure about that. I'd be surprised if i saw these in a UK list:
22. The Cure / "Just Like Heaven" 25. Go-Go's / "Our Lips Are Sealed" 26. Guns N' Roses / "Welcome to the Jungle" 29. Talking Heads / "Burning Down the House" 30. Pat Benatar / "Love is a Battlefield" 32. Night Ranger / "Sister Christian" 34. Poison / "Every Rose Has It's Thorn" 36. Tommy Tutone / "867-5309 / Jenny" 37. Aerosmith / "Janie's Got a Gun" 39. Modern English / "I Melt With You" 41. Motley Crue / "Dr. Feelgood" 42. The Clash / "London Calling" 47. Twisted Sister / "We're Not Gonna Take It" 51. Ratt / "Round and Round" 59. John Mellencamp / "Jack & Diane" 60. Young M.C. / "Bust a Move" 61. Styx / "Mr. Roboto" 63. Devo / "Whip It" 64. Paula Abdul / "Straight Up" 67. REO Speedwagon / "Keep On Loving You" 68. Public Enemy / "Fight the Power" 71. Rick James / "Super Freak" 72. The Fixx / "One Thing Leads to Another" 80. Rob Base & DJ E-Z Rock / "It Takes Two" 81. Cameo / "Word Up!" 92. New Kids on the Block / "You Got It (The Right Stuff)" 95. Debbie Gibson / "Only in My Dreams" 97. The Romantics / "What I Like About You" 98. Bobby Brown / "My Perogative" 99. Wang Chung / "Everybody Have Fun Tonight" 100. Loverboy / "Working for the Weekend" |
22, 42, 72 and 99 must surely be on that list, don't you think?
|
I think that there are other Cure songs that would be more likely to figure in a UK version of the list (probably In Between Days or Close To Me), and The Clash were never as popular here as in the USA, although Should I Stay Or Should I Go might get into the list.
Numbers 72 and 99 I've never even heard of! |
