Sonic Youth Rider
In the old forum, at one point, someone posted the rider list for what the band asks for when doing shows at a venue. Does anyone know where I can find that list again?
I did some quick googling and came up with nothing. Thanks to any help. |

" Drunk with power, list in hand, we wheeled our way into the produce section. Murin said Sonic Youth was so picky about organic products, he ended up spending more than $500 at Whole Foods on soy milk, imported dark chocolate, Zone bars and locally brewed pale ale. The noise pioneers also requested "clean ice cubes." " |
Do you reckon they eat even half of those things they request?

I think it was Van Halen used to ask for a bowl of M&Ms with all the green ones taken out on their rider. If the promoter got that wrong they would then check everything else with a fine tooth comb because they figured that getting the M&M thing wrong meant that the promoter hadn't bothered read their side of the contract properly.
|
do you think that for real? becouse if sonic youth requests all that,... i dont know, it seems stupid :D

You guys got hash in yr rider?

The flip side to that is that they ment it for a act of safety. Roth said in an interview that the brown M and Ms were a sign that they had read the rider ALL the way through, which include the elaborate stage setup. He said the night that the brown M&Ms were in the bowl, the stage broke down because they didn't read the rider on how to set it up properly. |
that's awesome

it's hard to eat well on the road. it's not a lot to ask that a promoter take a little initiative to see to it that a performer has some high quality grub to eat. whatever doesn't get eaten at a venue ends up on the tour bus where it gets devoured en route to the next show. there's not much time to get groceries or anything, so riders are pretty important. any band who doesn't ask for quality supplies is stupid.

My band's best rider was a packet of 10 Marlboro reds and a small bottle of bad whiskey. Still, I was happy enough.
|
i can understand the "clean" ice cubes, 90% of food poisoning cases from bars are because of the ice cubes...
|
Like some others mentioned, a rider can help feed people on the road...and it helps feed the hanger ons as well...
I don't think its as absurd as other bands and acts: http://www.thesmokinggun.com/backstagetour/index.html |
I think that i'm going to have a Sonic rider party where we go out and fulfill their rider and eat it while jamming and listening to sonic youth. anybody wanna come?

This rider makes me like them even more. Organic, vegetarian, local businesses, enough alcohol to enjoy a drink but not enough to get wasted. These are my values as well.
--- Pere Ubu has a very cool rider: http://www.ubuprojex.com/production/cogsriderUKEU.pdf |
That's a quite detailed rider Crocus* and crew have--seems designed to eliminate a lot of confusion, at least on the technical aspects.
Hmm, I remember a SY interview from late 80's-early 90's in which Thurston talked at the beginning and end about finding a certain cheesesteak place the band wanted to eat at. You likely won't find much healthy/organic food at such an establishment. But IIRC, they were in Philadelphia, so maybe it was a special "local flavor" meal for them. *I'm certainly showing my age with that reference! |
