E.V.O.L Phase

Dunno why but im going through a phase in which I can't stop listening to EVOL. Its has such a nostalgic feel (a lot of SY's 80's output does). Something about the record is so transporting. Although i unfortunetly didn't get to live through the 80's, as soon as you put the record on you feel as if you're in mid-1980's America. Lisa Crystal Caver's Liner notes in the reissue, explain far better than I ever could.

i go through phases where i listen to certain albums over and over; currently, i'm on a Daydream Nation/Superfuzz Bigmuff kick.

i can't find my copy of EVOL. it's either in a case in my car (buried beneath piles of trash), or a friend of mine has it. i wanted to listen to it the other night, but couldn't.

yeh i was thinking of going on an EVOL binge, I think all their early albums are pretty unique.

I wan to listen to a thousand leaves.

schizophrenicroom 11.04.2006 09:42 PM

yeah, i go through phases where evol is all i want to listen to. it's something about the liner notes. reading them really transports me.

I've been on an ATL kick for the last week or so. EVOL is also fantastic :)

All those SY liner notes are so well written. They really help set up the mood. For all that is said about SY being representative of New York I would say that applies to their newer stuff more than their older stuff . The 80's albums sound more like the perfect soundtrack to teenage surburbia life, both Evol and Daydream Nation sound like they should be the soundtrack to a Richard Linklater film.

_slavo_ 11.06.2006 07:15 AM

My EVOL phase has been lasting for over 7 years now.

Washing Machine 11.06.2006 09:05 AM

Hahaha, im not that dedicated, it was Daydream Nation last month and The Beatles' White Album before that.

yes! i've always thought that.

playing evol on a cruddy walkman at night is the best thing.

Everyneurotic 11.06.2006 07:55 PM

i listened to evol yesterday, it was a while the last time i did that.

marilyn moore is such a great song.

jon boy 11.08.2006 09:56 AM

i went on a massive bad moon/sister/evol phase a while ago. i think in many ways nyc ghosts and flowers is an 80's sounding album dont you think?

Washing Machine 11.08.2006 01:33 PM

yeah when i first heard NYCG&F it sounded like a return to their 80's sound, thats why I was surprised by the bad reaction it got. I don't get how people claim the bad moon/evol/sister/ddn era was SY at the top of their game and then completely shun NYCG&F.

Yeah its such a brilliant start to the record and great lyrics (like most of EVOL)

theend43 11.13.2006 12:24 AM

Tom Violence and Madonna, Me, You, Sean Penn (Expressway, right???? i'm always gettin this confused, "if i'm not drunk, then i'm not a slave to drink")
are the slayers here!!! EVOL sounds like an "in between" album to me. but then again

Yeah thats expressway. I thought EVOL sounded like an in between album at first. It's a record that really does reveal itself to you over time. I had to give it a few spins before I was convinced.
