Several months back I bought a soul-jazz Tropicalia compilation. Really awesome stuff, and I have been meaning to search deeper into some of the artists but I dont really know where to start. Any suggestions?

Gilberto Gil
Jorge Ben
Os Mutantes
Caetano Veloso

yeah, the sould jazz compilations was hottt shit! I haven't really heard much other stuff from them other than the compilation except Caetano Veloso's 1969 album and the first Os Mutantes album which are both great.

A friend played in a band that wasn't on the comp called Os Braveos or something like that. From that one time I heard them I was pretty impressed.

noisemachine 11.04.2006 08:44 PM

what specific albums by these bands do you guys think are the best?

Iain 11.04.2006 09:41 PM

Gal Costas first 2 albums are fantastic. Those are the only ones of hers I have heard though.

I can vouch for the first 3 (I think) os mutantes albums as well...they are fabulous.

We have a ton of these threads, and for more Brazilian music check out the World Music thread.

But yes. Gal Costa is my wife.

Savage Clone 11.06.2006 11:59 PM

I spun Gal Costa's "Gal" tonight.
Excellent!

Good artists! I have albums of the first 3, and I really want to get into tom ze more (I read the article a few months back in WIRE about him).

Brazilian nuggets- every album i've downloaded from here so far has been pretty awesome.

I only know Os Mutantes, Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil (and a bit of Gal Costa), but I really loved what I heard from them, and now want to listen the other big names of the genre (and listen to more stuff by Gal Costa). Yes, that Soul Jazz compilation was really lovely.

That blog seems promising...
