I'd challenge anyone to make as good a 'mainstream' album as this anytime.I'm surprised anyone would criticize this record when it's normally some underdeveloped 'geniuses' wannabe who take it upon themselves.

which, just supports what sonic youth themselves (as well as countless critics) have mentioned time and time again about the album...that is was basically more or less a grunge (for lack of a better term) concept.

they were in need of more "rock based" songs in order to be able to gold their own when touring w/ mudhoney/nirvana etc etc (which were what was "going on" at the time)

most sy fans that note goo/dirty as being their fav SY albums ussualy have a difficult time in understanding sy's more "avant garde/noisey" works. they're ussualy more prone to appreciate other bands such as pavement or modest mouse over more controversial/experimental/avant acts such as sun ra, noveller, my cat is an alien etc etc etc.

which is fine. its safe music.

safety is fine.. . i just personally find it a bit boring.

That's all fine and dandy.It's not my favourite Sonic Youth album either and i certainly haven't got a problem with their more noisey/avant garde stuff.What i'm saying is that,purely in terms of it being one of their more 'commercial' albums,it still pisses all over most indie/experimental/whatever fanfare that gets released any day on any random year.The continous mention of Dirty as being their 'grunge' album is a tad tiresome in retrospect because this record still rocks quite differently from the great majority of the bands that are/were confined under that umbrella.

I like Dirty. It's not very coherent, but has some nice tunes on it.
"Wish Fulfillment" is a brilliant one, for example.

it's the album that got me into the band in '92 when i was 12. next i got evol which blew me away so i have a lot of love for dirty.

Evol is way better than Dirty, speaking of this.

Dirty aint my favourite SY record, but it definitely contains a few favourites.

Namely JC which is an underrated gem of a track.

I wouldn't put it as harshly but I prefer it to Sister too. It's accessible (as is Rather Ripped which is getting criticised for the same reasons) but it's hardly a massive change. I like the clearer production.

Besides the production and it's non-timeless dated vibe the only thing bad I can say about it is that it's too good. Go figure.

Hrmmm... Is it so bad for something to sound like it came from 1992? I think people should get back to sounding like that, just as they should get back to sounding like 1982, 1972, and 1962. If it was good 15 years ago it's still good now. If it's not, it means you were fooled 15 years ago.
