I don't remember this guy's name, but he is the new bass player for the Dust. The bass player from Times and Tides (Irwin Mencken?) is not in the band anymore. This new guy really smokes! He was especially good on Waiting on a Dream. Of course, you can hear that yourself on these recordings. |
Tim Luntzel?

Yep. That's him. |

I've talked to him twice. He's a really nice guy too. Of course, he'd have to be to be a part of Lee's band. |
Aaah, I'm such a fan of acidjack's tapes from Maxwell's. Such a shame that the venue is closing down.
Now, listening to this set, you might notice there's a SY track on there: «Genetic». It's a good take, more acoustic, but tense and well delivered and, well, you know «Genetic». The thing is, listening to the chorus, I found that Lee had changed the lyrics. Really. Is it just me, or... ? |
Kamen, who are you and what explains your obscure return after a six year hiatus of posting? Zelocia, hello, keep posting, we need newbies!
|
XDDD
Old enough to have caught SY during the "Dirty Tour"... Been lurking here forever. That's my second-favourite hobby after SY: lurking. I'm a pro lurker. Cheers! |

I went to the show he did at Other Music in March 2012, the Webster Hall show in May 2012, the Union Pool show that was on April 28th of this year and I was at the Maxwell's show. I know that he played Genetic at the Glasslands on December 16th, 2011 and that was the last time that he played that song in the NYC area. Unfortunately, I did not know about that show but even if I had known about it, I would not have been able to get in. I had been waiting and hoping at the first three gigs that he would play it but he did not. So when he played it at Maxwell's, I was thrilled. After the show I thanked him for playing the song and I forget his exact words but he said to me that they did not play it correctly or something. So, it's not just you, Kamen. But still, for me, after waiting so long it was just great to see it played live. Quote:

Before I made my account, I had been lurking here for a few months. I guess that even though I've been here for a year and five months, that still makes me count as a newbie. Which is fine, I don't have a problem with that. Even though online forums in general have become irrelevant to the world of the internets, I really am glad that this one is still fairly active. Especially since the band is not right now. I have very few friends who understand my passion for Sonic Youth so I very much enjoy at least lurking around, which I do a lot more of than posting. But I'll try to post more often. Lurking is my third favorite hobby. My first is Sonic Youth. My second is The Smashing Pumpkins. |
well, we're flattered that y'all even feel there is anything lurk worthy here in the first place, but if y'all contribute some posts we can keep it going. If it dies, so be it, many forums have died before, but this one has had an exceptional run.

"SHE CRACKED"! Oh man, Lee sure knows how to pick them bitchen covers...

Thurston and Kim's marriage is no more but I am still hopeful that the band is not completely done. And I hope that this forum will not die, at least not anytime soon. But as long as the members of Sonic Youth continue to do individual shows and relevant, contribute-worthy threads like this: http://www.sonicyouth.com/gossip/showthread.php?t=96508 keep popping up once and awhile, I think that it won't die. |
It shouldn't necessarily, there are several very active Nirvana forums, we just got to wait for Sonic Youth to inch more towards classic. This forum was always the best of the 1990s bands forums, sonic youth fans are good people, and if they're not, at least they're entertaining folks ;)

Kinda strange, but I feel exactly the same. I've been here for almost 2 years (I think), but I've been lurking most of the time, reading the posts/news. This is a wonderfull place to experience Sonic Youth (my nr. 1 band, which should be no surprise :)) and all their related projects. I will also try to post more often, because it would be a shame if this forum dissappears in the future ... BTW, I finally got to listen to the concert today. It's a great recording of a superb gig. I saw Lee & band twice: in 2012 with version 1 of the band and a few months back (version 2). Both were great gigs, but I felt that the 2nd one was more confident, balanced and powerfull ... maybe the fact that there were some new songs in the setlist added to that feeling. I think this recording captures the band in this 'mood' perfectly for me ... and it makes me looking forward to the new record even more :) |
People, come on. The now ex-sonicyouthers remain recording/touring/collaborating machines. I predict that from now on there won't be a single trimester without news about some neat-o work by at least one of them. Until the end of the universe.
