ipod won't by default play wmv (propietary windows) but it will play quicktime and h.264. and mpeg4 (mp4, m4v, etc). notice this: files need to be reduced to dimensions the ipod can handle-- too much bandwidth and it will bust-- actually, itunes will refuse to load the video because it won't play (one of the advantages of using itunes to load media into the thing).

then again, there might be some flip4mac version for ipod (flip4mac is free & lets you watch wmv on OSX), but i don't know.

however--

HANDBRAKE is a free very powerful program that will compress your DVDs or almost any video source to ipod size (or other sizes/bandwidths of your choice)-- just use the presets, they are very good and will guarantee to work with your ipod.
