Well... I think perhaps what he means is that his films have a lot of things going on them that would only be understandable to the French... maybe he's saying something's lost in the language barrier, whereas american films are usually easy for him to understand.

Who knows -- it's just Godard. But like I said, to be fair, he doesn't even want his movies on DVD, period (notice he's never participated in any dVD releases of his work), so...
