He's a case study. Without these case studies, we are less likely to understand those that WILL go on to do similar things in the future. Does this mean I'm thankful for them? That's a bit extreme, BUT...I can see the value in these sorts.
If it weren't for them, I suspect we'd see far more people who think their actions boil down to "evil" as opposed to mental illness (which, I for one think it is....). If the actions of these sorts are to ever stop, it's very important for us to not only have theories/speculations, but an actual understanding of what drove them to be the sorts that they became...wether that be negative experiences in their earlier lives, or some medical condition they were born with.
For some they mean little more than entertainment, sure...and entertaining they are. Nothing really wrong with this. most that read up on Gacy, like you, don't need him in order to realize that killing in wrong.
