Dude, that lounge revival era...what complete bullshit that was! It was like someone figured it would be huge 'cos it was the antithesis of grunge, and even Sub Pop bought into it and signed Combustible Edison. How disingenuous is a song like "Zoot Suit Riot"? The mainstream media had to try really hard with that one 'cos there was no way kids would naturally identify with that sentiment.
If anything, it was a fruitful era 'cos it did uncover a lot of this amazing exotica which was finally being reissued, and it complimented the booming collector interest in original surf guitar records and other early rock & roll instrumental bands that preceded them.
A local fave of mine from the late-50's and early-60's RnR instro daze is a Redding, CA, band called Bailey's Nervous Kats. Their quasi-Eastern song "Cobra" is considered a missing link pre-surf record.
