I remember reading an interview with Robert Smith at the time and he said that he bought in Cedric "Stix" Stickley into the band to give them "da funk". Cedric was a well known jazz-funk drummer at the time and RS was keen to cash in on the popular new musical style.

It turned out that Cedric lacked sufficient funkitude and jazz-funk turned out to be a flash-in-the-pan anyway and so he was sacked soon afterwards.

He can currently be found playing with a "re-imagining" of 80s jazz-funk stalwarts Maximum Soul.
