13 days before my 18th birthday, Tricky Dick (president of the United States from about 1968 to 1974) saw fit to end the Viet Nam-era draft. I still had to register for selective service but my draft card was printed with a big 1H (meaning, on hold) instead of 1A (meaning immediately send to battle this fresh, warm body).
Probably one of the best presents anybody ever gave me.
