I think a "hipster" is merely an idea or a stereotype of a person and in real life they're very rare.
I don't think I've ever seen or met someone who fits in the general consensus of a hipster.
On a more pragmatic level it's just a tag for a consumer group. A young brand conscious lot just like yuppies (the difference being that the "brands" can be cultural items in addition to corporate trademarks).
