LA used to be a mecca for murals and street art.. there were murals on practically every street corner... then about ten years ago the county supervisors and city council passed "signage ordinances" calling murals business signs not art, instituted a licensing fee and went on a crackdown. This was promoted by the major corporate advertising companies like clearchannel and abc.. admittedly to compound the situation a lot of small businesses were abusing murals by hiring graff artists to spray paint their business signs to try and avoid the ordinary business sign license BUT the county and city know the difference between corrupt signs and sincere art yet they decided to crackdown on both regardless. Now? Murals are very rare in a city that was once saturated. Indeed i miss it terribly
