Today's theory: literary fiction is a genre like any other. While it isn't as constrained as, say, mystery, it still has its conventions. The literary reader expects certain things from the work, and the work is considered successful if it delivers. This is ultimately more important than the race/gender/nationality of the author. I don't think it's fair that one group should produce all or even most of the works, but bringing in new voices doesn't really change the genre expectations.
