Oh man I hate the original games. They're fucking impossible. I haven't played the anniversary editions, but I read that they did not make them any easier. I was able to get pretty far in them using save state on an emulator, but without that I'm dead.

Although the last levels of the X series tend to be quite difficult, as well. The 3rd form of Sigma on X4 was one of the most obnoxious fights ever constructed in a video game.
