True, absolutely. It still took Jay a while to hit his stride as an "album artist," even though Reasonable Doubt was incredibly solid. The rest of Vol.2 just pales in comparison to that song. It was successful at achieving the kind of mainstream popularity that Jay wanted at that time, but that was at the expense of the album as a whole. Not a great record, for sure.

But the song is one of the best hip-hop singles of its era. Totally classic.
