I know a lot of professional (and non-professional) people who give a lot of time and effort to good causes. There are thousands more, all over place. Some do it within their local environment, some travel the world. We just don't hear about it, because it's not broadcast. The amount of human decency is greater than most people think.
Google 'pro help' or 'mercy ships' and see what you get, and that's just for starters.
I'm sure Mr Guevara had his good points.
