...This early edition of the group (Sonic Youth) found themselves described as "Pigfuck" music, a term coined by Village Voice writer Robert Christgau; other Pigfuck groups were Big Black, the Butthole Surfers and Pussy Galore. (In some ways these groups are very different from each other, but they're all to varying degrees abrasive, noisy and confrontational.) Based on this classification, and on a negative live SY review by Christgau. A feud developed between Moore and Christgau, and Moore renamed "Kill Yr Idols" "I Killed Christgau With My Big Fucking Dick" (Azerrad, 246) before the men sorted out their differences amicably.

"The first time I ever heard of someone making a mix tape was in 1978," says Thurston. "Robert Christgau, the 'dean of rock critics,' was writing in The Village Voice about his favorite Clash record, which just happened to be the one he made himself: a tape of all the band's non-LP B-sides. One aspect really struck me - Christgau said it was a tape he made to give to friends. He had made his own personalized Clash record and was handing it out as a memento of his rock-and-roll devotion."
