It's kind of difficult to say. That one (Rain Tree Crow) is most of the members of Japan trying to fuse their own improvised ideas into one thing. It's the first time any of the musicians had worked that way, I think. It's sound is a precursor to what Sylvian's career would develop into, really. I think that album can't be used as a scapegoat for his more interesting(See Fennesz collaborations etc) music that much.It was pretty clear what the direction he was going to go to was even by the time that album came out.
